When a vehicle leaves the factory it has been manufactured to a specification. Unauthorised remapping will change that and it will therefore not complay with the certificate issued under Construction & Use.
In addition it would void the manufacturers warranty and quite possibly make the vehicle illegal to be on the road.
You are required to inform your insurance company of any such changes and IF they agree to give cover the premium will be high.

Geez.  Theres a lot of hand wringing in there.

The O/Ps car is out of warranty anyway.  Many reputable remappers will include a warranty to cover an engine fault where the manufacturer attributes it to the remap.

Remapping doesnt make the car illegal to be on the road.  Calm down.

Yes, you should inform your insurance company, most will cover a remap no problem and the premium could be as little as a few pounds extra per year.

Most...are you sure?  How many have you asked, or know of?   Can you name any that are fine with it?

But they could also ask you to take your business elsewhere...ie cancel.

Yes, my car is long out of warranty but I've decided against remapping anyway. My insurer is NFU Mutual and I imagine they would be accommodating.
  • Wow, that Celtic tuning website says my Fiesta 99HP Ecoboost could gain 60 HP-that's a 60% gain and in torque from 111 to 193.

If only, I think the rest of the engine/clutch/gearbox would all self detonate before long!

    Great idea though

There is a lot more to remapping than people think. The various components on a vehicle are designed to meet the specification. Your car may be able to do 150mph rather than 100mph before remapping but tyres are speed rated - if you can now do 150mph the question is can your tyres. Braking systems are the same.

Having dealt with the aftermath of modifications I know there is a lot more to it than half an hour on a computer..

It does seem likely your Ecoboost will self detonate long before you get the chance to remap it.
They do seem to suffer from the odd problem that's more often than not, terminal for the engine.

Completely agree. I've had remaps in the past for many tens of thousands of miles. More recently had a generic remap that was dropped on petrol turbo and now has apparently caused overheating and melted/damaged spark plugs so head is now off being refurbished. Not a quick or cheap process to resolve but car was running fine before.

Not all remaps are made equal!
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I have no experience of remapping. Would an owner know, if they bought a car that had been remapped?
What can remapping do? My 1.7 Zafira has only once done a regen, at least that is what I believe. I have owned it over 3 years. Do they get remapped when the DPF is taken out?

Here we go again with the old Ecoboom quote. I've had my 1.0L Ecoboost Fiesta for 9 years now, with the regular oil change every year. Been a great little car.
