How counter-productive, stupid, irrational, unhelpful and irritating is this? Oh, wait, “EU Regulation” just about sums that up doesn’t it?

If only there was an agreement between European countries such that their citizen's mobile phone use was harmonised and all mobiles would operate Europe-wide exactly as they do in your Home country.......
Irrelevant in this case as it’s clearly down to the amount of time the sim is abroad (over 120 days) which would have breached the rules if we’re were still in the EU and had inclusive roaming anyway…
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Au contraire; it is completely relevant. It is the entire basis of what Lebara told me.
I am not being penalised because I was using my data for too long or too often or even that it was contrary to fair use policy. They told me that I was using more data than I usually did in UK and that was why I was being penalised. Hence, I think, my rather justifiable ire. They give me 4Gb and tell me I can roam as I do at home; but only apparently if I'm already a heavy user.
So, @eDicky, does that further explain my "curious attitude"?

I can confirm 100% that it'll be the amount of time that you're away and not (on this occasion) what you've used there or in the UK, when you've been away from the UK for over 2 months (usually 60-63 days} you'll be deemed as in extended use and won't be able to use allowances (people in the UK but having no use for the same period of time also trigger the same message)

    I appreciate your conviction, but…
My husband has exactly the same Lebara plan and travelled with me; he hasn’t had the message & his phone is working fine. And,
I telephoned Lebara after getting the message, the CSA told me that I was using more data than I usually did in UK and this was the reason for the clampdown.
I’m beginning to sense that they don’t really know what they are doing or why!

The EU Roaming feature is intended for holidays etc.  As you are abroad for four months this exceeds the usual roaming duration and will flag up to your mobile provider that you are breaching their terms.  For such long times abroad you will need to use a local SIM.  It is irrelevant how much data etc you use at home compared to abroad.

Even if you are living in an EU country and go to another one and come under the EU mandated free roaming you would still most likely have this issue as it not intended to have long durations to stop people living in one country and using a SIM from another.
This always was the case. IIRC the terms are 90/180 in my contract.

The only exception to this currently is Ukrainian SIM cards (I have a Kyivstar one in my phone), but I think this is the policy of a group of phone operators and not law.

I agree a dual SIM phone should get around this problem for OP.
