Was just offered fixed rate by EDF, but when looking at my current standard rate tariff, it looks higher than the price cap…
is that right?
On the “current standard 1st July” it’s showing
electricity standing charge of 61.82p
electricity unit price 31.10p
i thought price cap is 0.53p and 0.30p?
Is this right, or do I need to go to EDF and ask….

Check the price cap for your region and payment method, not just the headline average.0

A fixed tariff can be higher than the price cap, the price cap only applies to the SVT.AlexHaden2010 said:Was just offered fixed rate by EDF, but when looking at my current standard rate tariff, it looks higher than the price cap…

@MattMattMattUK the OP is querying their current SVT against the UK average SVT
"but when looking at my current standard rate tariff, it looks higher than the price cap…

Yes, DD in Merseyside. Thank you.frugalmacdugal said:May be a silly question, so how can they charge more than the cap?0 -
I believe EDF's fix presently on offer is slightly higher than the present SVT, as is the one being offered by Octopus. Whilst the price cap might fall a little in October, present wholesale prices would suggest that it could well rise again come January although at this stage of-course it is still guesswork, but the closer we get to the winter period the less uncertainty there will be. You have the choice to stay on the SVT and save a little in the short term but then perhaps pay a higher price after January. Only perhaps - no one knows for sure.
E.On Next presently has a fix which is slightly lower than the price cap but that is only on offer to some of its existing customers. So Energy also has a fix that is slightly lower and is open to new customers so you might wish to investigate that.0 -
They're not charging more than the cap. The cap is different in different regions.AlexHaden2010 said:

There is no one cap, it varies by region, they will not be charging more than the cap. There is no cap on fixed tariffs, only on the SVT, a fix can charge any amount that they want and you can choose to agree to that amount or not.AlexHaden2010 said:

Right, thank you - I think I get it. The SVT for EDF, can be higher than the actual OFGEM price cap? They don’t make this easy do they?0
-
No, it cannot be higher than the Ofgem cap, but there is no one cap, the figure you hear in the media is just because they have dumbed everything down so much. There are regional caps, EDF will be charging you based on the cap for your region.AlexHaden2010 said:Right, thank you - I think I get it.
