@matelodave - re the default option of free incoming calls - has it ever been suggested that you have to make an outgoing call once every x days to keep your phone service ? (as with the old style mobile services)0

No, because its not a mobile service and my T&C's (both when I was with BT and now I'm with VF) don't specify any requirement to do so.
If you want to know what you are getting, what you need to do and how much it's gonna cost then check out the T's & C's for your chosen ISP.
BT's are pretty clear as are Vodafone, although if you've had a service with them for some time you may have to dig out those which are relevant to your contract as there have been lots of changes and revisions over the past couple of years. That way you shouldn't get any surprises, alternatively speak to them and find out.
I make it a point to check out the T&C's relating to the contract I'm about to take out (or that are relevant when I renew) and print out a PDF copy and save it (I do the same with my energy company as well, especially after being a SYMBIO customer)Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
