When does a fixed term savings account START paying interest?

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but I've never had a fixed term cash savings account before, but I've just opened a Natwest ISA and was planning to transfer £20k to it.
However, it says "start date 1st September" - does that mean I won't earn any interest until that date? If so, that's annoying! But I won't make the transfer until much closer to the time.
