This morning I rang Barclaycard with a view to obtaining an additional card for my partner. I've had additional cardholders in the past with no problems. This time, they can't issue one as my partner doesn't live with me and they can only provide additional cards for "close family members". This never used to be the case as one partner didn't live with me and one only lived with me for half the year.

This is a shame as, having a disability, I can't get out as much as I'd like and it'd be really helpful if he were able to buy things on my behalf. Generally he pays cash and I transfer it back to him. Sometimes I've given him my card. But it occurred to me how easy it would be if he had an additional card on my account.

Aside from the fact that I was on the phone to them for 45 minutes and every question involved the adviser having to put me on hold for several minutes - does anyone know when these rules changed?

Just apply for it in your partners name and put your address, I've never had a CC company ask for any additional info. Remember they're not lending them money, as you're still responsible for everything they spend, so the checks don't need to be all that stringent (I've had additionals on Barclaycard, MBNA, Amex and others I don't recall right now). We do live together, but different surnames.
So you are suggesting committing fraud given for Barclaycard you have to tick a box to state the person is a close family member that lives at your address?

Not saying you wont get away with the fraud @guesswho2000 but most arent as brazen to recommend it on a public forum given the potential consequences were the OP's bank to find out
I'm just saying that banks have, ime, never bothered checking these things. The additional cardholder isn't liable for any of the spending, so there isn't generally any credit check, and there's never been a financial link created as a result.

In my case, it was a close family member (de-facto partner) who did in fact live at the same address. What OP, or anyone else, decides to do with that info is their business.

And it could cause all sorts of problems if OP is claiming means tested benefits, or is getting the single occupier council tax discount, if credit searches show another adult living at the address.

I get where you're coming from, but in the case of a second cardholder on a credit card account, there would be no additional record created - there's no new account, it's just someone else having the ability to use your account.

I'm not saying do it, or even recommending it, it's just an option - it's up to an individual as to what to do with the information.

You are missing that apart from risking losing account.
Online retailer may refuse orders by these people, if they are not happy to send to a address that is not listed on the account.
I don't see how this is relevant? Risking losing the account is highly unlikely. Online retailers will either mail to the billing address, or allow a separate billing/mailing address - you'll know when you place an online order where it's being delivered. If they won't deliver to anywhere but the billing address, then seeing as it's their partner, is it really that much hassle to get whatever it is delivered to said address?

So because the banks are poor at checking it's ok to make fraudulent statements to them @guesswho2000

Given the CCTV system in our local Coop has been down for a few weeks and they are cronically understaffed I guess its ok by you to go shoplifting from them because you wont be caught

That's a ridiculous statement and not at all the same thing, but whatever.

It's not a credit card, but you could open a current account with Starling. They let you have a "connected card", which is an additional debit card that you can give to a friend or carer who helps with your shopping. This can be anybody.
