Ryanair baggage allowance Vs Easyjet

Earlier this year we flew on holiday with Easyjet, first time with the new, reduced carry-on allowance. We bought canvas bags from Amazon measuring 40x36x25 which were perfect.

In 1 week we fly with Ryanair and have only just noticed their cabin bag is 40x20x25!

I feel daft asking this but... will we get away with the same bags? It's gonna be £40+ for another set of slightly different bags. Nobody checked our bag size once on Easyjet, and the bags even went on overhead lockers, not under seats like they said! Are Ryanair hotter on this?

It may come down to whether they fit in the smaller space if necessary.  So soft sided and not stuffed full might be ok.  But others will know better.

I wouldn’t take the chance. We went with Jet2 and they didn’t check any of the bags on the way out, but they were checking all of the cabin luggage on the way back and people  had to pay astronomical amounts to have them put in the hold.
The majority of the time they may not check, but it will cost you more than £40 if they do.

I don't think it's viable to generalise - you might get away with it but it'll probably depend on a range of factors including how busy the flight is and what side of bed the crew got out of!

40x36x25 is significantly larger than 40x20x25 though, so experienced airline staff will easily spot the difference....
  • Thanks for all responses. I realise it might have seemed a stupid question - can you fit a square peg in a round hole, no. I've ordered some new bags. Just absolutely gutted that I've now spent £100 on bags just because two budget airlines have marginally different luggage standards.

Are you sure you have the right measurements? We fly EasyJet quite often, last 31st May. Unless it's changed very recently I believe the under-seat bag size allowed is 45 x 36 x 20. That's like a laptop bag which is what I use but not with a laptop.

I flew Ryanair yesterday. My bag was over the allowed size, but I was near the back of the queue. As I waited I could see some people having their bags checked, but by the time it was my turn no-one bothered (perhaps the gate staff were getting bored) and so I got away with it.

    Conclusion: you just cannot tell.

They use bag sizers so if it's soft and squashes down into the sizer you should be OK.
Checks seem to be random, a lot of people seem to get away with bigger bags but sometimes they'll insist it goes in the hold and charge you a lot for it.
