How long before you appear on credit reference agency files

Options
I've been watching all the switching accounts for bonuses threads and I was wondering how long it takes for you to appear on the credit reference agency files.

I moved back to the UK at the end of 2019 but because we lived with various relatives until last year I didn't have a permanent registered address. Or bills in my name.  Various attempts, including one a month ago, at switching or opening new accounts online have all given messages along the lines of "there is not enough information on Experian (or whoever) to confirm your identity, please contact us"

It's never been a problem opening accounts in branch but I would love to be able to start switching.

So just out of interest, how long does it take for them to collect enough information on you? Or is there another problem?

Have you tried any of the NatWest group banks? I know some banks use Experian questions from your credit file to try and verify you, but a family member of mine who has been back in the UK for only a few months recently managed to open an account online with NatWest by uploading a picture of their passport and a utility bill in their name. The account they opened would’ve been eligible for the switch offer if they already had an account already to switch to. If you have an account already that is registered at your current address I can’t see why you wouldn’t be able to do the same.

Have you tried getting a credit card with the current bank you are with? That would help you build your credit file up. In answer to your question in the thread title, unless you specifically have a current account that is specifically classified as a basic account (a banks standard current account isn’t the same thing) then you more than likely do have a credit profile with credit reference agencies, it’s just very limited

Registering on the electoral roll usually makes a significant difference to credit status, in terms of being recorded as living at a permanent address, so worth doing that if you haven't already.

Check the state of your files, and see suggestions for improvements, via:

It could be a basic account. I remember it was downgraded when I moved abroad on the basis I wasn't entitled to overdrafts, loans, credit cards or savings accounts any longer.  I don't think it was upgraded when I moved back.  I'll double check that. And trying getting a credit card.

The check free credit report link still says there isn't enough information on me.
