I know this is a conversation we have all the time on here, but the increase in people cancelling bids, or cancelling sales or just not paying seems to be increasing. It's not just ebay, I'm getting it on Vinted (just the cancellations- there's no bids on there to cancel) and even the final straw on a forum I use on FB for a specialised items where I have packed an item and someone has asked me to cancel as they have overspent this month and the payment has overdrawn them.
On Vinted someone can cancel at any point until seller downloads the postage label, after that the seller has to agree- but obviously if item has been sent then seller just declines. The 2nd and onwards time a buyer cancels they get automatic 1* negative feedback. Cancellations don't cost the seller anything.
The FB one I've cancelled , but she messaged me yesterday late evening asking me to cancel ASAP and I didn't pick up the message until a few minutes ago when she sent me a 2nd one saying the paypal payment was still showing as live and had hit her bank - that one has cost me the paypal fees.
I've had 1 cancel on a private ebay account this week- that has cost me 30p , and 2 non payers have been closed this week (so didn't cost me anything). For the percentage of sales I get on my ebay private accounts that represents a fairly large percentage. I decided this time to report all the buyers, I reported the non payers as interfering with my auctions (the report bit didn't really fit but it was the closest I could find) and I reported the person cancelling for roughly the same pointing out that buying then cancelling half hour late was malicious and cost me money.
I just don't know what is going on with it all.

If it's becoming more common then possibly the cost of living is seeing a lot more people living hand to mouth and suddenly realising that things they bought on a whim weren't good ideas after all but I think you've pretty much nailed the real problem - no consequences for cancelling.
You're probably nicer than me as I wouldn't be eating paypal fees for someone cancelling - i'd say i'll refund you for it as a kind gesture but i'll be deducting my costs so i'm not out of pocket.
I also think part of the problem is people not distinguishing things sold by commercial sellers and those that are private sales. So people feel they can just change their mind on things and act like they are buying from Amazon rather than Joe Bloggs.
Plus a lot of people these days are just entitled ****s2 -
I've not paid any fees at all on my paypal account in years as a buyer or seller. You may want to check the type of payments you are making and if you're using a credit card that may be why there are fees. I pay most stuff direct from my bank account. That sunds like a business account to me.. I closed mine because there were fees for everything!
I've had a V!nted sale cancelled because the person was on holiday, because they didn't have time to find it. I have cancelled sales because I couldn't find an item and because I decided I didn't want to sell (my daughters favourite toddler dungarees.. she is 11 now!)
But I agree, buyers do all think we are business sellers and treat us with the same lack of consideration. I sell our stuff because I cannot afford to just throw the money away, I need to replace the outgrown clothes, pay holidays, pay bills, feed and house my family.. it's not 'profit' it is stretching every penny. I've been doing it for 30 years.. (before online stuff I sold to friends and family and car boots)
As a V!nted seller I print off the postage label IMMEDIATELY so they cannot cancel.. I have unlimited time to find and despatch said item.. definitely works. The problem is everyone wants stuff for next to nothing not it's worth, I add 50p-£5 to the price so it can be 'reduced' and they think they have a bargain and I get what I wanted anyway. I have a lot of handmade items sewn and knitted, and they just don't appreciate the time invested or material costs.. mass production has drowned out any bespoke market.
I don't sell on Eb@y any more.. it is purely businesses and the fees are astronomical now, I can't afford the losses.

All paypal accounts have fees attached whether private or business (I use a standard one and a micro one) and both attract fees on incoming payments.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. The amount of buyers on Ebay who buy something and, in less than an hour usually, have buyer remorse and wish to cancel has shot up hugely for me. There's an awful lot of kids out there who have unfettered access to their parents accounts!1

Children are children, why are these pre school children allowed completely unfettered access to everything ?I always want to say to these parents , you think this is so cute but actually it just makes me worry what else you allow them to do .I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. It's still happening. Last week I accepted 3 offers, one was paid immediately (hurrah), one took over 3 days to pay I was a few hours away from being able to cancel and the last is still unpaid and will be cancelled late this evening as this is day 4.
The 2 slow payers are both long term users of ebay, both have brilliant high feedback - lots saying 'fast payment' and such like. None of these items are high cost, both under £6 and I daydream about contacting them just to ask 'why?' (obviously I will not be contacting them)
On a better note someone who I blocked for non payment a while ago sent me an ebay message saying they seemed unable to buy my widget which they needed urgently , it was a near identical item, but not the original one they didn't pay for, and could I check my settings as it was coming up with a message about buyer not accepting bids from them, or something.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
