Thanks for everyone’s replies. You’ve all been really helpful

visited apple store - they couldn’t say for sure it was sim blocked and offered to send in for repair. I refused the offer and went to CEX. An hour later after their internal tests, they confirmed it’s been sim blocked and offered either a replacement or refund

i got full refund no questions asked, even though I had bought it about four days outside of the six month window

They didn’t mention the six months and neither did i

was happy with the no questions asked service but lesson learnt - be careful buying second hand cellular devices
The 6 months is only really an issue of burden of proof - before 6 months any issue is assumed to be inherent, after 6 months you need to show it was an inherent fault. I think a SIM block is a different kettle of fish really since its not something you would cause yourself due to misuse. It doesn't mean your rights end after 6 months.

Good that you got your refund though
6 months is also the point at which a deduction for use may be applied.

It’s great OP got a full refund and I wouldn’t expect much of a deduction for 6 months use any way.

In general I’ve positive experiences with CEX, though I am always wary of “so brand new that the plastic is still on bits of the phone” etc.  (samsungs come layered with the stuff).  My worry is its someone who gets the free upgrade etc, then declares it stolen later - Who buys a device and then sells it straight on to CEX (who offer some of the lower cash prices vs others.  Sure - freebies, but those aren’t normally ipads/phones, more likely a google pixel laptop or a pair of earbuds).

If the device worked until the OP replaced the SIM, and the same SIM works in other devices it's possible that the OP damaged the SIM holder when they replaced the SIM.

That was my thinking based on the original post, but op then confirmed that it worked for a while AFTER changing from lebara to lyca.

Nope. Please read my earlier post. Confirmed as sim blocked by CEX after testing.

In general my experience buying stuff off CEX has been positive. I'll continue buying from them, but perhaps not phones or devices that take sim cards.
