    Not an apple user but I would have two questions;
What do you need to do if you want to use your ipad on another network?
You generally can use an iPad with a different network as they aren’t normally locked to a specific network. If they are, it’s normally because it’s a contract iPad and after the contract expires the device can be unlocked by the phone company.
If the SIM card is locked (by the consumer normally) it requires a passcode to unlock and begin to use.

And, allied to that, can you do something to stop your ipad being used with another sim if it is stolen?
When resetting to factory settings (a device wipe) you are required to enter in AppleID username and password to ensure the deletion is actioned by the owner. If this doesn’t occur, then the device owner can put into lost mode and lock the iPad entirely up and prevent any access to it by the thief. It also tracks the iPads location and relays that back to the owner.
Because of this requirement stores generally don’t accept devices that haven’t been factory reset/you can’t factory reset for whatever reason. Additionally I assume they would check the serial number attached to the device for reports of theft.
Thank you for that. So if you want to change network you simply take the old sim out and put the new sim in, just as I would with my galaxy?
And unless the account registered to the ipad marks it as lost it should work with another sim?
The op had it working with one lebara sim for six months but it will not work with a different lebara sim so it doesn't appear to be a network lock (and the original sim is no longer active as I understand it).
So physical damage during the sim swap would seem more likely?

I agree with @RefluentBeans above. Don't go to Apple, take it back to CEX.

Whether you bought on-line or in shop you can return it to any shop under their 24 month warranty for repair, replacement or refund. Up to 6 months they would have refunded  what you paid. Over 6 months they refund their current selling price which is probably not much different.
Wow! They sound like the people to buy from. My guess is that they will say it isn't covered by the warranty though, either because it is accidental damage or user error causing it to malfunction. Let us know how you get on though.

Last time I put a new SIM in an iPad it didn't work because I had to initialise the SIM first before it was live for use. Couldn't do it on the iPad so had to put it into my phone and do all the registration there then when it was active transfer it to the iPad.

Could it just be something as simple as this?

    Thanks for all the replies

yes the Lebara sim worked until I cancelled the sim. Then Lyca worked for a while after that, but then in last few weeks I suddenly get ‘ no sim’

i even tried my own phones Lebara sim. Same issue

Could be me just being stupid and missing something - this is why I have booked an apple appointment tomorrow

iPad was literally a month old when I got it and has apple care until around September or October .

I don’t want to go to CEX but if I do, I want to be armed with all the facts before they try to fob me off

like I said, could be something really simple ….

OK, so it worked after you switched from lebara to lyca, then stopped working with the lyca sim and since then hasn't worked with other sims (including other lebara sims?)
And all of these sims work in other devices?
It does make it sound like a hardware fault as it stopped work with a sim it was previously happy with).
Don't know the details of Apple care so will just bump the post.

Thanks for everyone’s replies. You’ve all been really helpful

visited apple store - they couldn’t say for sure it was sim blocked and offered to send in for repair. I refused the offer and went to CEX. An hour later after their internal tests, they confirmed it’s been sim blocked and offered either a replacement or refund

i got full refund no questions asked, even though I had bought it about four days outside of the six month window

They didn’t mention the six months and neither did i

was happy with the no questions asked service but lesson learnt - be careful buying second hand cellular devices

CEX require proof of address from sellers.  I suspect now they'll check mobicode or whomever the "theft" system is they use to check devices when they buy them in, and if its tagged as stolen / blocked, they'll proceed from there.

In any case, not your issue of course, good to see them refund in full.

CEX were  flogging loads of these in January when I got this - at £500 less than Apple’s price at the time. The condition was Grade A - basically opened only to check - I think even if sealed CEX will open to inspect so then they sell as Grade A.

According to Apple the iPad was originally from Sky Mobile.

Either someone block bought them (maybe got it ‘free’ as part of some other package ) then block sold on to CEX

either way not my issue now and happy that a quick resolution was found.

The 6 months is only really an issue of burden of proof - before 6 months any issue is assumed to be inherent, after 6 months you need to show it was an inherent fault. I think a SIM block is a different kettle of fish really since its not something you would cause yourself due to misuse. It doesn't mean your rights end after 6 months.

Good that you got your refund though

Excellent news. Cex would be very wary of bad publicity and being known for selling stolen goods is something they would want to avoid. The really important thing is to always keep receipts (and ensure the receipt absolutely matches up to the item you have purchased.) Otherwise you could quite easily find yourself being accused of theft or handling stolen goods. Your receipt confirmed that you had purchased the item months before it was reported as stolen, and will enable the vendor to find the details of who they purchased it from.
