Oversold Data Plans

Hi All.

With impending mortgage rate hikes we are reviewing all of our spending at home and taking a look at my partners sim only deal with EE she has been hugely oversold on data (150gb in the plan with a monthly usage of between 3-6gb total!).

She has another 18 months to run on the contract, so other than buying herself out I don't think we have any other option than to just suck it up and learn from this mistake.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience with a change in terms with any mobile providers that might help with the conversations we try to have with EE.

I would contact EE and ask how much to end the contract.  And then I would get someone to contact EE and find out if they have a better deal (2 phone calls).  After that wife can decide if she wants to argue with EE about switching or, if the number add up, cancel and get a new deal somewhere.

You could try to say the package was missed to you,
'she has been hugely oversold on data (150gb..."

If you were told that was an appropriate amount and dissuaded from other deals which would have been perfectly suitable you might have a case.
Otherwise I suspect ee are going to quote the full amount less any cpi/rpi increase for next april)

You can always call them and explain, if you're signing up to a new deal then you may find them accommodating. Don't lie to them though and claim any nonsense about being mis sold (unless you genuinely were of course).

I don't think you'll get very far. The last two times I've 'upgraded' with EE they were very clear that the choice was mine and the process requires you to confirm.

Also (could have been different when she signed up) but they do 5Gb, 25Gb, 125Gb and unlimited .

5 wouldn't have been enough and the difference between 25Gb and 125Gb is £3 a month.

Where they do try to upsell you is their smart plans and add ons which would increase the cost quote a bit.

How much is she paying per month? What would the difference to another package have been? If a phone was included then the cost between data amounts might not be that big.

How did she sign up to it? Online? In store? Over the phone?

What do they say about why they chose that package? Was there something else thrown in for it? I know I took a higher data plan than I needed because at that level you got no roaming charges in a host of non-EU countries inc one that I'd be staying in for 6 months so it made sense to overpay on data to get it.
  • Thanks for the responses. Tried a couple of the suggestions but nothing with relation to any improvements straight away.

Paying off the contract does work out as a saving, but not substantially enough to move forward.

Best suggestion that we are considering is to "upgrade" the contract to add a phone to the package (as whilst unable to downgrade, you can upgrade at any time). Monthly charge would be slightly more but she would have a brand new phone that she could either use and sell her old model, or put away and sell as new in 6 months.
