EE taking over from BT Mobile - Roaming Issues

Had a shock today.  I previously had a BT Mobile family bundle so we had 5 sim cards, all with same data/phone allowances and worked really well.  EE took over in April as BT is letting that part of the business go.  I was told it was a simple switch and we ported our numbers over and had a slight increase to the data allowance for effectively the same package over next 2 years.   So when going abroad, I expected the roaming charge to be applied to the account as was previously, and not individual sim cards.  Oh no!   EE will charge me £2.99 per day per sim card, of a monthly quota of £15 per sim card.  So for a family of 4 going to EU for 7 days, that is an extra £60!!!  Contacted EE but got no concession, if I want to leave the contract early as I am beyond 14 day cooling off period, the cost is £198....you guessed it, PER SIM CARD!  And we have 5 so that would be almost £1000 just to cancel.  This is really sharp practice and was not fully explained on the takeover.   Really super unhappy with them on this.

  • To clarify - the roaming charge is £2.99 per sim per day OR a monthly fee of £15 per sim card.

'had a slight increase to the data allowance for effectively the same package over next 2 years.'

What information did you receive prior to your switch? Presumably ee told you the data allowance was more, that you'd be tied into a new contract, did they say other terms would not be affected? Just out of interest were you tied into a contract with btmobile before they closed? 24 months is a long time to be tied into a sim only deal imo.

If you feel it wasn’t made clear, log a complaint and hopefully they’ll help. Although, as the other poster said read the literature again first to confirm the information you were given.

Cheapest option would be to take out 30 day Sims with the likes of Lyca or Lebara and not renew after the first month. You won't get SMS/calls on your normal number while away but any Whatsapp will still be received and you can use data as normal. Cost will be well under £20 for the month for you all.
