how long are passports taking?

Hi all,

Just discovered my OH's passport has run out! We would like to go to Iceland on 7th Feb, do you think there is enough time to get a new one? Has anyone had one recently and know how long it took?

Thanks

You can get them in one day these days.

You should be ok in that time frame, alto I guess they wont be processing again till the new year now, so in reality you have about 4 weeks..should be fine

Mine took about 10 days when I applied a couiple of weeks ago, and that included reporting my old one lost (courtesy of HM Royal Mail, I'm not that careless!). I was told its usually quite quick this time of year as not too many applications, busy time is Spring onwards...

You can get one on the same day by going in person to a passport office. This can only be done for renewals. And you pay for the privelege, £114, as opposed to the usual £72.

If you go to the Post Office they will do it of you under the Check and Send scheme. They will ...

check and validate your application form
send it to the appropriate passport office
    provide you with a receipt
provide you with a phone number so you can track the progress of your application.

The turnaround time is under two weeks. I did mine this way and it was back in five days! It costs £7 extra.

  • I used the check and send service @ £7 and had my passport in 4 days.

This was about 2 weeks ago.
  • I am also in the process of getting new passport. However I need to send LS01 form as well because my old one was stolen and therefore need a countersignatory! Not so easy. I need it for the start of February!

But this is a moneysaving site and paying £7 for something you can do youself seems to me to be a waste of money. It doesnt make it a quicker turn round

Took ours about a week and I did it all, just read the form about 3 times so you know which parts to fill in.

Countersignatory rules are now very relaxed - anyone in public employment can now sign the form and photo.
