SIX FIGURE CONBFIRMATION CODES - NO MOBILE SIGNAL

I have a Saga savings account from which I tried to draw money on Tuesday for the first time.  Saga required me to enter a 6-figure code which it sent by text.  Our mobile signal here is very poor and after several requests to 're-send', all the codes arrived the middle of the night.  By then, the account was frozen.  I was told that I will have to phone every time that a code does not arrive - which will be nearly always.  Can your recommend a good savings account which does not require these codes? I have been told that Cynergy doesn't.  There must be others.  I will transfer my account.  Thanks.

Is there an option for your Saga codes to be sent to a landline number?

I've used Chip for the past couple of months for quite a few deposits and withdrawals - never been sent a code by text, not sure they even have this option. I've also used Al Rayan and Zopa and don't remember getting text codes from them when withdrawing money, although I haven't used them recently.

Cynergy require you to use an authenticator app on your mobile and then send it a 6 figure code. Not any good for you methinks.

I have a 'thingy' from Cynergy that generates the code, no use of mobile phone required.

Of the top-paying easy access accounts available at the moment, I know that Principality (limited access) and Shawbrook do require codes to be sent via text. The Yorkshire BS use text but also have a 'call' option so you can presumably arrange an automated call to your landline if necessary, although I haven't used that option myself. I don't have any accounts with the Family Building Society so can't advise on their requirements.

Off the top of my head, other banks that don't require security codes to be texted are Atom, Chase, Zopa and Ford Money although the easy access rates from some of those are lagging behind the best at the moment.

Many of the app-based banks don't use OTP for transactions but one or two do send one OTP as part of the account opening process.

I do empathise with you. The only reliable signal in our house is in one corner of the kitchen so you have to leave the phone there, come back to the PC, trigger the OTP then go and get the phone. It's not exactly efficient.

I opened an easy access account with the Family Building Society this week (I think it's still top of the list for interest at 4.35%) and I can confirm they don't use the OTP by text for either logging in or withdrawing.  You set a memorable word when setting up your account and they ask for a selection of characters.

The "pull" method of funding when you're inside Chip would require a phone signal, but I suppose the recently-added "push" from the current account method would work OK. But I think for a withdrawal from Chip, your phone will have to have a signal (and it's the temporary lack of a signal that's the problem, not 'texts'). I think the Cynergy account would work OK - certainly with the special-purpose authenticator they can give you (which photographs a QR-like code on your PC, and generates a code from it, that you enter into the PC). I suspect the phone app could also do that without a signal, but I'm not certain.

Interesting. I assumed the app used wifi and not the phone signal (mobile data?) for communication. Indeed, Chip works fine on my iPad (I transferred money this morning) and that has no mobile connection (no sim card).

Silly me. Yes, Wifi may make it all work. I was thinking that a lack of text functionality meant no communication for the phone at all, though I see that the normal way of texts working is only via phone masts - I'm not normally in the position of having Wifi but no phone signal, so hadn't thought through what would work and what wouldn't.
