Pay a company by cheque whose online bank account does not accept cheque payments

If there is a company that has an online bank account that does not allow payment by cheque and a community which has a bank account that does not support payment by bank transfers, only by cheque, can they do the following: Write a cheque to that company, take the cheque to the community's bank and using a paying in slip, enter the companies sort code and account number and pay in that cheque to the company's bank. Will this work?
The community could probably get the bank to do a BACS transfer, but that would probably cost extra.

I don't think you can pay in a cheque to  one bank for another bank.

Does the company bank allow paying in at the post office?

If a company has an account that doesn't accept cheques how are you going to deposit the cheque? You also need pre-printed slips these days, and this won't exist for this type of account or you won't have one anyway.

Just ask your bank to transfer the money electronically.

Or alternatively, write a cheque out to an intermediary individual who you trust in the community and then get them to make the bank transfer to the company in return.

(I'm aware of a community account which has a probably similar issue - two signatories are required both for cheques and to facilitate online transfers, and it's usually easier to get two signatures on a cheque than get two individuals to electronically authorise a bank transfer within the timeframe permitted).
  • Thank you for all your comments.

We have a back up plan, along with one of your suggestions, whereby someone with the online banking facilities makes the payment to the company and then gets reimbursed from the community. It's just that this doesn't seem to be a good way of doing it as far as the community accounts are concerned.

I think I remember back in the olden days of banks that you could go into your bank and pay your utility bills by cheque by paying that cheque into the utility company's bank account.

As for getting the mandate on the bank account changed so we can do bank transfers, I don't think the bank account supports bank transfers. It is a fairly old type of account. I've been suggesting that they should change their account, but it hasn't happened.

I believe you still can - but it does rely on the utility company accepting that form of paymernt and providing a paying in slip.
Another possible method (again if the company concerned facilitates it) is to use either the Post Office or Paypoint.

We pay a Local Authority this way - their invoice includes an appropriate bar code to allw thisform of payment.
You write a cheque out payable to 'Post Office Counters', take the cheque and invoice into the Post Office and they take the cheque, scan the bar code, and give you a receipt.
