I have been quoted £7000 to have a heat pump installed. This is in addition to the  £5000 government grant the company says they will apply for. Is this normal  ?

Depends on the size/model of heat pump proposed, what changes are needed to the existing heating system for it to work properly, any changes to electrical systems, a new pre plumbed hot water cylinder being installed as well etc.

Certainly at the higher end of the scale, but that could be due to it being a larger property, needing a larger heat output, or requiring more amendments to install. Not enough information to comment on, you need to at least confirm what the works quoted are and what model is proposed.

But that includes the UFH as well, not just the heat pump installation. Hopefully they've done detailed heat loss calculations, as installers often underestimate the amount of heat needed in barn conversions.

we need more details. what does that £7000 include? if you haven't got any details and there aren't any details on the quote and you just have "install heat pump - £7000" then I would press them for a detailed quote.
depending on what they actually have to do, it could be perfectly reasonable. if the job is to simply supply and install a heat pump to an existing system, then it's not reasonable
heat pump retrofits are just about the least easy things I can think of to retrofit to a house,  and normally the "other costs" completely dwarf the actual cost of the pump so trying to compare your job with someone else's job without providing any details is not going to provide any meaningful info

My house is a small 2 bedroom cottage approx 80sq m.4 radiators needed.
    150 to 170 litre HWC.   6KW
  • Are we talking about a wet system here ?
Have you considered an air to air system ? This will provide heating in winter and air conditioning in summer. Daikin & Mitsubishi both sell exterior units that can provide heating/aircon for up to 4 rooms.

That sounds a bit expensive.  Have you tried Octopus?

That's really expensive then, even if it's a 14/17 kW unit.

Is the cottage fairly modern or well insulated already? Modern double glazing, cavity wall insulation, loft insulation etc. 75 W/m2 output from the ASHP isn't much if it isn't.

Probably £6k for the kit, £4k for install plus 20% VAT. So probably just at the top end of prices if you're getting a higher spec heat pump like Mitsubishi Ecodan.

A good saving with the grant, but it's a big cost overall. Is the ASHP definitely going to save you enough money over your current system?
