Adsl Options?

Rural relative being kicked off John Lewis broadband.
Line only supports adsl due to length, gets 12mps (bt claims only 5).
No Shell or Talktalk at exchange. So does that mean her only two options left are Plus.net or BT? Or are there still some providers left that I have missed. Thanks.

Any provider who offers ADSL through OpenReach can provide the service. Try one of the search sites such as uSwitch to see who it comes up with.
The John Lewis broadband was a white label of Plusnet, so if your relative was happy with the service then maybe just stick with them.0 -
Thank you. Unfortunately John Lewis broadband is closing which is why we have to move...
Most of the comparison sites don't properly separate adsl from fiber which makes it a bit difficult. They are not close to knowing what is available at our house either...
It did occur to me to check EE, which did not appear on the comparison sites. They do adsl too. But are a bit more expensive.
Oddly if you add a call package BT works out cheaper than plus.net or EE their budget brands.
It just seems a little odd that after 20 years we are back to a BT monopoly. But perhaps that is just how it is, we have been left behind. Technically there is mobile broadband but I think the rural signal and complexity of the new would not match this situation too well.0 -
There are still a few about who connect to the OpenReach ADSL backbone but there are fewer as it is now old and legacy.
You mention Shell and TalkTalk not being at the exchange. Assume you mean they do not have their own kit int he exchange (unbundling). This does not mean they cannot provide the service to someone on that exchange as they will still be connected to the main backbone to supply the service. Not that I would ever recommend anyone go to TalkTalk.
Now Broadband is another supplier who is still doing ADSL provisions.
Personally I would just go with Plusnet or BT if the price is decent as they provide pretty good services.0 -
With Shell and Talktalk I meant I put the postcode and phone number into their website and they replied they did not support this area.. Despite comparison sites suggesting them.
Yes I will probably end up with BT. Despite historically BT being a sign you are overpaying..
Thanks for the thought0 -
We use Airband (other WISP services are available) as our line only supports 2.5 Mbps

TBH , it’s not a BT monopoly as there is no barrier to other providers offering services, if other ISPs ( like Sky and Talk Talk for example) chose not to , that’s a commercial decision for them , and given that BT cannot , like those ISP , simply ignore areas that don’t make commercial sense , in some way you should be ‘grateful’ that service is available at all.
Although there will be a few areas where ADSL outperforms VDSL/FTTC because the distance to the cabinet from the property, or the address is E/O and there is no actual ‘cabinet’ , therefore no possibility of FTTC , have you checked at the wholesale level , rather than on individual ISP websites what is actually available ?

If the phone number isn’t recognised, use the address option

How about Starlink? They currently have a rural discount on at the moment and they would get around 150Mbps.
