I currently have a decent printer, HP6032 bought earlier this year, manged to get 12 months instant ink and set to use the 700 pages per month option, all good, however, my son, who has a learning disability, loves 'typing' on his laptop and printing, the problem is he's doing about 1000 pages per month and is now starting to cost me. Ideally I would programme a rule that limits the number of pages, I tried in the settings to only print odd page numbers to reduce it a bit.
He will open a random google page, right click and print, I'll hear the printer going like the clappers with my head in my hands watching my bank account empty like I've been hacked.
I'm considering a mono laser printer, as I think toner would be a better option given the current volume of pages.
I don't want to stop him doing something he loves, never mind the meltdown it would cause by turning off the printer.
It can be a basic unit, as it will only be churning out B&W pages of A4.
So to keep him happy and prevent me from contributing to the soaring profits at HP, I'm hoping someone can offer some advice on what printer to go for, I was looking at a Brother HL1212 from Curry's £99. A compatible toner from someone like cartridge save for £16 ish on a multi buy deal, is going to be much better than the current scenario.
Cheers!1 -
Update: Thank you all the suggestions, my temporary measure was to buy a USB cable, that worked fine, a pain that I have to move the laptop next to it to connect the cable to print.
I will look into the other printers but as a low user only printing when needed and only printing bookings or something I don't trust just by emails - my upcoming trip to Las Vegas, printing many bookings. When the current ink goes, I will look into the replacement recommendations.0 -
There are two types of HP printers, ones that were designed by HP and ones that came from Samsung when HP acquired the Samsung printer business. I wouldn't touch the Samsung derived ones (mostly because I worked for Samsung supporting printers).
I've just replaced my old colour laser jet with an HP M183fw and have been really impressed with it.1 -
If you don't need to print photos and require a printer with wireless capabilities, I think the inkjet printer from BENTSAI has some excellent options for considering. Their printer doesn't need to be connected to WiFi, just insert a USB drive to the printer and you can print immediately.

Putting aside the fact that the OP's printing problems were occurring 2 years ago..why would you recommend an industrial handheld printer designed for printing addresses and barcodes onto packaging and cartons, that costs $400+ (+ tax + duty) and ships from the US?5 -

Hi 2023. HP laser 179fnw here, just over £200.
that might seem quite expensive (although forgetting that 20 years ago they cost £1,000), but if you buy a colour inkjet with a years free ink, it comes out to something like £180 - and laser toner will last [not forever, but]. I read on a reliable website, like, that 20% of all inkjet ink is used for cleaning. if you print occasionally and not everyday, lasers might save you more in the long run. (maybe)
not that I'm ever advocating deviating from supporting your local multinational corp, but there are unbranded carts which have all the chips in them needed to pretend to be "official" cartridges [for this one at least]
My printer came in a box, which had, in large friendly letters "this product contains technology to ensure you use genuine cartridges", which was nice. HP were obviously a bit low on budget, because this was written in French. possibly because HP didn't want you to read it.0 -
I have been using a Canon 3600 series for many years, When printing large documents I use a USB cable rather wi-fi that ensures no glitches -

The initial thread was started in 2023. I think they probably bought one by now. 💡0
