Looking for a new printer since my HP Deskjet 2722e will not connect wireless or after removing the printer and HP scan and now will not connect to the network by manually typing WIFI password and automatically - being right next to it, also the laptop is too.

Yet they always seem to work day 1.

So basically any recommendations for a wireless printer that is not HP, just for basic prints?

I switched to a colour laser jet after years of getting annoyed by blocked nozzles, stripes, ink bleeds and general annoyance (did you know that the machine which inspired the band name Rage Against the Machine was an inkjet printer), and am so very happy with it.

Don’t use it for a month, and it will always fire up and print perfectly. Unless you are doing photographs it’s also far higher quality than an inkjet.

The toner cartridges are expensive, but do seven billion pages each, so for occasional home stuff it just doesn’t matter.

    Mine’s an HPM255DW;

And yes, I know you said not HP, sorry, so any other entry-level colour laser jet will also do a good job.

You haven't mentioned what type of printing you do (what is basic printing?)

But I second a laser printer either colour or black/white, unless you print photos I find inkjets pointless because of all the negatives with them

7 billion pages per cartridge? So, one page per day for 19 million years. Won't run out of toner for a while then. ;)

I faced the same dilemma recently.  Similar background to you in terms of usage patterns.  It is undeniably handy having a printer, but ask yourself do you REALLY need it.  I decided to pause before buying a replacement a few months ago....

Inkjets just dry out if not used regularly. So you tend to use them. Even when you don't have to. Nice for photo's I agree but then Asda do photo's (as do all big supermarkets), and how often do you really need prints.  Also consumables are a rip off.

If you don't want colour, a mono laser is a reasonable option for the few times you NEED a hard copy - perhaps printing a letter to send.  But ....

After a couple of months without having a printer and simply saving stuff to a pdf, I realised I really didn't really need one.  Yes OK occasionally it would be convenient, but at c£150+ plus consumables + landfill considerations, I've realised I just don't need one.  With me I think it was just habit - a bit like using a mouse on a laptop which has a touchpad.  Try managing without a printer. You might find, like me, you don't really need one.

I'm old school,  I like having back ups of tickets etc, paper doesn't  break,  phones do.

Old office printers are a bargain from ebay, toner lasts a long time and if you own an older printer you can get toner cheap, can easily last years if you are a low user

Toners last ages, but laser printer also consume a lot more energy.

Get a printer with ink tanks instead - no cartridges to replace every few weeks! I have an Epson Ink Tank printer (used by teh whole family) and it's the best printer I've ever had! I've actually been waiting for the tanks to empty so I can fill them up again - they just wont go down - its been a year!!! lol

I have the Epson ET2820 - highly recommended.

Your whole family comment maybe why you print enough to ensure nozzles dont get clogged etc... we tend to print very occasionally and when using inkjet you always had to do 3-4 nozzle cleans and test pattern prints before it was ready to go again and the cleaning cycle eats ink heavily.

We still have an inkjet (epson) for the occasional photo but 99% of the time we print on a Brother B&W laser printer which after about 5 years is still on the original toner. About 18 months ago it started warning it was low, obv a low capacity starter one, so bought a new one to be ready for £20 and yet the original is still going strong.

For those that dont print often, factoring in the cost of running nozzle clean sessions, I'd be surprised if Laser werent still cheaper despite the higher electric use on a per print basis. Its also a case of an extra 10p each printing session rather than £60 for a new set of inks every couple of printing sessions.

Personally went for Laser for having something reliable when I do want to print rather than money saving.

For basic text printing I would go for a mono laser.  They are available for about £100 but that will pay back with the savings on ink cartridges.  Toner cartridges are not expensive compared to ink.  A toner cartridge for my Brother laser costs about £35 and has an estimated use of 1200 pages.  I've had this printer a couple of years now and it's still on the original cartridge.  I gave up on inkjet because I was sick of constantly having to go through the head cleaning process as I don't use the printer regularly.
