It really does depend on what you want.

We had roller blinds in some of the windows at our previous house, which we fitted ourselves. You can get roller blinds that you can cut to size. Some were from John Lewis (sale) and some from our then local IKEA. None of them were expensive. Having said that, we splashed out a fair old whack on tailor-made curtains for our front room (which were fitted for us). Horses for courses really.

I've just bought more blinds online from www.blinds2go. You can choose from the range of fabrics and type of blinds, type in your window measurements and get an instant online quote. You can then compare the costs of different materials and whether you want blackout linings etc. If you go for a company that comes out to measure each window etc for you, expect to pay substantially more for their tiem and expertise (which is fair enough).
Blinds2go have a new choice for attaching blinds called 'click2go'. It enables blinds to be fitted without having to drill into the lintel. I've not tried it but the reviews seem good and may be a useful option if you are not a diyer.
  • I used a mix of John Lewis blinds & blinds2go and EBay for velux windows. My partner installed them but when he was a handyman he would have charged £40 per blind for installation.

Obviously depends on the number of windows and the type of blind, rollers will obviously be significantly cheaper than shutters, but in any case it doesn't have to be insanely expensive.

I bought my white wooden Venetian blinds from wooden blinds direct and they worked out about £100 each on average (granted, this was 4 years ago). The most expensive blind was about £150 and it was about 1.7m x 1.25m.

I measured and fitted them myself, it's honestly not a hard job with a drill and a bit of confidence. You could even save more money if you didn't buy 'made to measure' blinds and cut them to size yourself (though I wouldn't recommend unless you're confident in your tools/skills!).

I would recommend when taking the recess measurements, that you measure several different points of the window. In an ideal world recesses would all be perfect rectangles but in reality they can be wider at the top, narrower in the middle, etc.
    Know what you don't

All our blinds have been ready made ones, fairly cheap, except the kitchen one. We've spent maybe £350 on 5 windows. We were lucky and all our windows were close enough to standard blind sizes available on line. Depends on your walls as to how easy to fit. I'd say of the 7 I've fitted, 3 were easy, and 4 were a struggle.

IKEA sell blinds. They are quite cheap but obviously you will end up fitting them yourself.

Or maybe you can find someone willing to fit them for you.
I did a couple of windows with their blinds. The blinds were around £50 per window, and fitting took a few minutes. It's a very easy job.
