no you can tax it at the same time when you apply for the reg doc,ive done it twice for friends at the post office
The DVLA certainly say you can apply for tax with a V62 application - but they do also say you MAY not be able to tax it unless you are the registered keeper. I presume though that the latter caveat is just a get out should they decide they don't want to tax the car for some reason.

I can't really see any reason why the DVLA would want to stop someone taxing a vehicle though. It would be a bit like TV Licensing saying they won't issue you a license until you can prove you own the telly.

I suspect the only time you would have an issue is if the previous owner still had tax on the vehicle in their name.

It is supposed to be a disincentive to steal or clone a motor. If it's not taxed then sooner or later the police's ANPR will spot it and seize it.

My Post Office contact says if you do not have the green transfer slip that the PO computer will ask further questions including the postcode of the previous reg keeper. I am sure that tedted knew the seller's postcode, etc. If you do not give the right answers to the questions the computer just says 'no' and puts the vehicle on a watch list.

You can't just drive a car round for almost a year without tax or SORN.
Each month the DVLA computer tracks vehicles which no longer have tax or SORN. It sends automatic fine of £80 by post to reg keeper. If unpaid the fine increases up to £1,000.
The OP may be in for a surprise when he finally becomes the reg keeper.

According to Webuyanycar it's at the PO clerk's discretion whether they agree to tax your car with a V62 - how very helpful! It does say you may need the name and address of previous owner and that the invoice might help for proof of ownership. Thinking about it though that information should be with the garage - not sure if they can share it though.

Their suggestion is to SORN it, get a V62 and then tax it when your V62 is approved (2 weeks is their estimate)

Whether you consider all this a pain or not it's probably still quicker and easier than waiting for a dealer to do it when they've shown no interest in helping.
