Today I  placed an order with Sky to shift phone and broadband from Vodafone to Sky. During the order process Sky asked if I wanted to port the number,  which I did. Then after I'd gone through the order and payment process I was greeted with your telephone number can't be ported and so a new one will be issued. I  wish they could have advised me of that before taking payment.  I've had to spend an hour phoning Sky to cancel.

Does anyone know why a landline number can't be ported from Vodafone to Sky?

Aside from that, I note that a lot of broadband deals seem to be minus the telephone line service these days. So then if I opted for broadband only in the future, I'm wondering how I would be able to port the broadband if I  didn't have a phone number attached to it?

I hope someone here can explain both of these points please.

That's probably down to Vodafone as they are the most useless of companies.

Broadband doesn't need a telephone number associated with it, the two are actually totally separate.

    Thanks.

So if I have only broadband and I want to move it to a new supplier, won't new supplier ask for a phone number?

No, you're thinking of mobiles perhaps. If a new supplier doesn't give broadband only but insists on a "landline number" they'll issue you a new one whether you need it or if you never plug a phone in.

It should be possible to port a number from VF to Sky , but if they won’t , there is not much you can do about it ( short of cancelling ) obviously if you took a broadband only package, there wouldn’t be a phone number , and if you converted from phone and broadband to just  broadband with the same company or a new company, the phone number would eventually revert to the company that originally issued it , and that company could ( if they wanted to ) allocate it  to to one of their customers

Yes I understand what you mean. I have the same arrangement as you did with Vodafone, ie fibre to the house and phone is plugged into the router. Yet Sky say they can't port the number. I can't understand why that is.

I believe that Sky are no longer offering a phone service if you move to their FTTP -Or at least all the Sky adverts are suggesting that their FTTP is not suitable for customers who still need a landline and/or have poor mobile coverage
