Dodgy MOT

I purchased a car online from a dealer in London last June and had it delivered. I recently took it for an MOT and the garage said that it should never have passed the MOT which was carried out before they delivered the car to me since the switch for the fog lights was missing (there is just a hole where it should have been and I had no idea what was supposed to be there so thought nothing of it). Is there anything I can do about their deceit in selling me a car with a dodgy MOT? I have all of their details still.

So switch could have been removed after MOT but before you received it.traciewhite said:I purchased a car online from a dealer in London last June and had it delivered. For that reason I doubt you can prove it's a dodgy MOT.

I think a year after receiving the car, there is nothing you can do. How would you prove this was missing when the car was delivered?traciewhite said:I purchased a car online from a dealer in London last June and had it delivered. Have you taken the effort to familiarise yourself with the car in the year you owned it?
Did you ever read the manual?
Surely, in the course of a year, you've needed to use the fog lights at some point.0 -

My fog lights get switched on at the MOT, in over 40 years driving the number of times that I've actually needed to use them can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

I would agree, although My do get switched on from time to time when checking lights.facade said:

As a driver not been anywhere close in needing them in past year.
As a passenger about once in 15 years.
But have lost count of the idiots who feel the need to put there fog light on when driving on a clear night.

I still know where the controls are for features fitted to the car.0

Are you sure the switch isn't somewhere else, and the most recent MOT tester just didn't spot it ? That happened to me at my last MOT. There was a hole on my dash where there could be a switch and the tester decided that hole was a missing fogblight switch and failed the car....what the tester didn't spot was that the switch for the rear fogs is on the steering column.....where it always is on that model of car. They somewhat apologetically issued another mot cert with a pass when I pointed this out....I also reminded them they had tested the car the previous 2 years...and had found the switch on those occassions !!! Red faces all round 😀
Have you checked your user manual or looked in another car the same to see where the switch should be ?1 -
I always thought that only a rear red fog light was mandatory…..after all not all cars have fog lights fitted.
In which case it’s not a fail.But I could be wrong.0 -
You're right, but I imagine it's the rear light the OP's discussing.motorman99 said:I always thought that only a rear red fog light was mandatory…..after all not all cars have fog lights fitted.

Except they refer to ‘fog lights’ rather than fog light - there’s only one red oneCar_54 said:

No, there can be one or two. Though I don’t imagine the OP knows!motorman99 said:
