iD Mobile Changes EU Roaming Fair Use!

Very quietly, iD Mobile have introduced a new fair use policy for data roaming in the EU.

Previously, customers had to consult their 'fair use calculator' which generated how much data you could roam with based on the price of your plan.

Now, they have standardized this with a set roaming data cap of 30GB, this along with free EU roaming is actually a lot better value than the network they work on; Three!

Customers ordering after 21/06/23 will benefit from the new 30GB EU roaming cap, existing customers are still at the mercy of the 'fair use calculator'.

That’s the one thing that was going to put me off swapping to them when my current cash back deal ends at the end of the year….. so they might be on the cards again!
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
  • I am on a monthly ID Mobile Contract 1.5GB data for £5.  I want to upgrade to 12 month contract 80GB £5 for first three months then £10 a month.  The reason for the upgrade is we go to France for six weeks twice a year so the data doesn't last long if the campsite doesn't offer free Wi-Fi.

I certainly can't see myself using more than 30GB a month in respect of the fair roaming policy so that wouldn't be an issue for me.

What I am concerned about is, if I sign up for this contract can ID mobile withdraw the free roaming?  Even with 30 days notice it would mean I would have to wait 11 months or whatever for the contract to end before I could change contracts.

Also, I see that ID Mobile use the Three network.  Three don't offer roaming.  Could they stop ID Mobile from using their network in Europe so that roaming would not longer be available?

My husband is on Three network so had to buy a SIM card in France recently.  His contract doesn't end until February.  He is thinking of paying the £45 exit fees so he can join ID mobile.  He spoke to a Three customer service representative and they mentioned something about a new business model but they hadn't been trained in it yet but it was going to offer roaming.

The disadvantage of buying a SIM card in France is that he would have a different phone number so won't receive calls on his old number while he is there.  Also, if our dogs got lost the ID tag has his UK number on it.

Thanks for any advice on this.

Not on my husband's contract.  Is this a new contract you are on?  Can you advise the cost?

It might be best to add the French number to the dog tag, rather than expect someone to make an international call if they get lost.
It's pretty hard to predict when any network will withdraw their free (inclusive) EU roaming. Since Brexit none are obliged to provide it any longer.

Three have offered roaming since they launched in 2003..?!

  • If you joined Three, or upgraded your Pay Monthly plan on or after 1 October 2021 (unless we have written to you to confirm otherwise): You'll need to pay a daily roaming charge of £2 for Go Roam in Europe destinations, and £5 for Go Roam Around the World destinations to unlock your UK allowance abroad.

Do you really mean they don't offer free roaming? Or just that it's not setup on your husband's phone? I'm not aware of any that prohibit roaming but there may be something obscure in a specific contract.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • If your phone supports it, an e-sim might be the answer. I got one from ZIM online before I went to France, €20 for 20gb over 30 days. Worked flawlessly and saved me the Orange £2 a day, meanwhile I banked the Orange data ( unused rolls over) so pretty good. Only drawback is that calls have to be over data, but that is not much of a problem these days and we seemed to have excellent signal even in very rural France.
