ID Mobile Free Termination

Hello,
I have a contract with ID mobile (including handset) which costs £32 a month and I am 17 months into the 24 month contract.
Initially the signal was fine as I worked from home and was always locally in my area. A few months ago I went self employed and now regularly travel up and down the country and have found the signal to be woeful. Call always getting cut off etc which is super annoying to say the least.
I logged a complaint with ID mobile and to my surprise they came back the same day and said they would waive the early termination fees (£244) if I returned the handset to them.
I guess I wanted to check if this seemed right? I did query that I am effectively buying the handset and could I not pay off the remaining balance of just the handset but they refused saying I would have to return it to cancel the contract penalty free.
Maybe I'm just trying to have my cake and eat it but in true MSE style I was hoping to keep my nearly paid off handset and go sim only.
Thoughts? The phones trade in value is only apprx. £140 so I am probably being greedy!

As they aren’t compelled to allow you to terminate (as no contract guarantees service everywhere), I would take up their offer which seems generous.0
