Some of my annoyance for dishwashers are:
    • how much rinse aid to top up? Hard to see!
    • how much dishwasher salt to add? Also a faff.
    • If a dishwasher is integrated, how do you know if it is done or almost done?
The latter easily be covered by the "smart" aspect of a dishwasher but shame we haven't reimagined the location of the salt and rinse aid holders.
Our rinse aid is fairly easy to see but goes from empty to full very quickly so either you are there for ages filling it slowly or your squeezing the life out the bottle and within half a second it goes from empty to full to overflowing.

Salt agree, never known how much you are supposed to add

The dishwasher at least helps by telling you when either needs topping up but dont know how smart that is or if its a simple count of washes and just assumes you put the right amount in.

There are various solutions to the how much time its got left. Ours is smart so its just a quick check either on the phone app or the cooker front (if its not cooking it acts as a hub and displays what the other devices are doing and time left etc). Prior to the smart option there used to be some that projected the time left on the floor infront of itself from under the door which was fairly good.

Agree. I like smart devices (we have several along with a smart vac) and when we move to our new house, will likely look to add additional devices like smart doorbell (already has a Hive there but apparently Nest is better so will see!).

Not much innovation for dishwashers (for the user end) last few years other than adding a wifi controller. :)

Never had Hive so can't compare but certainly our Nest Hello (wired) works very well.

Have to say I dont really follow dishwasher technology too closely but there were things I'd not seen before when looking last year for one:
    • Auto-open at the end of the cycle
    • Automatic detergent application from a reservoir based on programme and waste water dirtiness
    • Knock to open door
    • Internal light
    • Adjustable setup of basket (prongs can be folded flat, middle basket raised/lowered etc)
Certainly water and energy consumption is vastly improved

So how will all these smart homes manage when their internet connection goes down? And when a security loophole is discovered in one of the major manufacturer's products? Script kiddies will have a field day seeing what they can access around the world.  ;)

I imagine they will manage exactly as they do today. Anything that can be automated in our house is, but if then internet was down it all works as it otherwise would. A smart dishwasher without the internet is still a dishwasher, just without the extra functionality being accessible. My router does have a backup 5g connection however so if my internet went down it would need to be fairly catastrophic to actually kick me off line and in that situation it's probably last on my mind.

As for vuln exploitation, everything is firewalled off so it can only be accessed from ip ranges inside my network and on an approved device. Non container has access to any other container data and the worst data loss I could suffer would be to wipe the section of my system that stores home assistant, because no other access is available. And that is backed up daily to an output on Dropbox and google drive automatically.

But those aren't new risks. If you're comfortable having a phone, laptop and tablet in your home you already have those risks. Cameras in the news lately but think if you're going to fill your house with cheap Chinese cameras you have to expect that sooner or later. Realistically access to a dishwasher is pretty low risk.

So yeah, I'll manage just fine 😎

One uses a dedicated computer to act as a gateway and provide wifi connectivity. Easy enough to set it up to block any communication with the outside world, and if (when) the internet goes down, everything in the home still talks to each other.
Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

Most of our devices don't need the internet to operate within wifi distances, video doorbell is the only one that loses all its smarts.

Using AppleTV as the home hub it can control the devices over wifi so still operate smart light bulbs, smart plugs etc whilst in the home with the phone/watch without internet. Similarly our oven acts as the hub for all our white goods so you lose the remote control aspects but can still see how long the dishwasher has to go on the programme or what temp the warming draw is set at etc.

Think there are much more worrying things the teen hacker can do than stop my dishes being cleaned given everything else thats remote controlled these days.

Wow I stand corrected, these are pretty cool! In fairness, I haven't shopped for a dishwasher for many years (due to being a rental).

You seem to know a fair bit about smart tech so keep an eye out for a thread soon asking for advice ;)
