I don't know about growing in a pot, but my grandad used to have a red rose called 'Don Juan' which he trained over an arch and I remember it having a recognisable smell from quite a distance away.

If I'm remembering the name correctly/if it's the same rose, Google is telling me that it's common in America (which would make sense given what I know of our family history) but it looks like it can be found in the UK.

I don't think this has climbing but it's worth a look perhaps

    I asked a similar question  :D

I'll have a look in my rose book when I get home. Any excuse to look is a pleasure

Hi, really liking the pics and comments of roses on here. I've never grown them before, but definitely going to try them next year, Can anyone tell me when the best time to go to garden centres when the prices will be reduced. Thanks in advance

Garden centers aren't the cheapest option @homeboy_1. Keep your eye out in places like B+M and Aldi/Lidl. I got a pretty little rose in Aldi yesterday for a couple of quid. A lot of their gardening stuff is good :)

Best time is not now when they are in full bloom, attractive & premium prices
ideally, use this time to have a browse around and check them out for colour, scent, foliage, habit etc. Note names of those you like and just bide your time until autumn / winter when they will look awful and just potted twigs
Or even better, once you know the names, buy in winter, bare rooted, much cheaper. They'll flower next year and years after

and just to say that roses positively love heavy clay soil.

Bare rooted are the cheapest way to go, then you dig a hole and puddle it in
see here for a description of this method:

One of our local garden centres has got reduced roses now.  For a garden centre they are very reasonably priced.  We walked past the roses today, the scent was amazing.

If you want something specific then you have to pay up.
With luck and a fair wind you may find one you want reduced come autumn but it's just a lucky chance.

It's definitely worth wandering around them now for colour, size and fragrant, take a photo including label.

Though you can't always trust the label, even in 'proper' garden centres, so it's worth checking online/in a reference book that the rose you like is the rose you think it is/will do well where you want to put it :D
