@badger09 I obviously have never understood bonds until now!  I just understood they were less risky so I opened a LS20, then when it did really well in the first year, I decided to open a LS40 with the intention of moving the LS20 to it, if the LS40 did well.  I understand now that is completely illogical.
My HL is 33% HL Multi-Manager Balanced Managed Trust, 33% HL Multi Manager Special Situations Trust and 33% HL Multi-Manager Strategic Bond Trust.

95% of the time, investments will perform within their typical volatility range.  5% of the time they will perform (up or down) outside of that typical range.  They have been within that 5% period and seen losses not seen in over 100 years.

Equities are the same.  They to can have 5% periods but when they do, you could be looking at 80% losses.

You are paying around half to double in charges compared to what an IFA portfolio would be without getting any fo the advice or support that goes with it.     One of the main reasons people look to DIY is to pay less in charges.    At the moment, you are going DIY and paying more in charges.

The risk level of the HL portfolio is much higher than Vanguard funds.

I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

Watch this video, it should assist you in deciding what to do with your VLS investment.
    I hope it helps you.

  • I have a Vanguard S&S Isa with a LifeStrategy® 80% Equity Fund - Accumulation investment, it's made nothing in the past year so very disappointed by the performance.  Am in the process of transferring some funds out to a Cash Isa so at least I can get some growth though the transfer process has been so painful, so far has taken over a month and hasn't started yet as I seem to have to do all the co-ordination between the banks they won't talk to eachother.

Transfer difficulties would probably be worth discussing in your own thread rather than this one, but the comments in response to OP's disappointment with performance apply to you too, i.e. you should be investing for the long term, not being driven by performance over such a short period as a year.
