Thanks a lot - I think I may just give that a go!
Edit: Very pleased to see mrfrisbee's post before I had to resort to Jojo's solution!!0 -
These are designed for open coal fires DO NOT under any circumstances use with a gas fire or a back boiler unless these have the gas cut off & have been de-commisioned even if you don't use the appliance, get them taken out first.I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Why is that, SCrgi? If one removes the thing from the chimney first, what difference does the fuel source make?0
-
because blocking the flue on a gas appliance is illegal & most back boilers have a permenant pilot light that needs to be vented up the flue, if you forget to remove the blockage on a coal fire the room will fill with smoke & you will soon remember, if you forget to remove it on a gas appliance you will be deadI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

Just ordered a chimney sheep as we want something that we can easily remove and replace when we have a fire.0

As we haven't yet decided on the fire surround to put on the fireplace we uncovered in the back part of our sitting room, we have a carved wooden screen in front of it to cover up the bare bricks and gaping hole. It's not so much warm air escaping as howling gale coming down the chimney I'm bothered about.
I wouldn't ever put anything up the chimney we use but this other one could do with something until it's sorted out. Chimney sheep don't look big enough to me tho0 -
chimney balloon substitute??
I feeling a draft through the unused chimney and plan to fit a bag with shredded paper! which effectively should cost nothing!0 -
I live in a modern rented house with central heating and have an unused fire grate and chimney, so don’t need to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning from a fire.
I have just filled a plastic carrier bag with other carrier bags and tied it up. Then put the bag of bags into another (non-degradable type) outer carrier bag which won’t break down into bits and put it upside down in the chimney flue with a cord tied onto the handles.
Hopefully this will keep the heat in, cold draft out and save the landfill site from the carrier bags that I seem to have collected when forgetting my reuseable bag.
Cost = Nil.
Time investment = 2 minutes.0
