Garage changed brand, now won't honour manufacturers warranty?
Hi,
A year ago I bought a 2nd hand Toyota Aygo from Arnold Clark Toyota. It still has about 6 months of manufacturers warranty.
They have now re-branded to Arnold Clark KIA and are saying they will not be able to do any warranty work because they are no longer "Toyota", and I have to take my car far further than the 5 minute drive (20 minute walk) all they way to Maklin Motors Toyota 25 miles away.
While it was in for a service/MOT they had discovered a some issues (one not covered) and said they would be covered under the warranty but they can no longer do it because Toyota won't re-imburse them for the parts and labour.
I know if I buy a telly from Currys, I take it back there and they get it repaired (whether they fix it them selves and claim the cast back, or send it direct to the manufacturer). I don't know my rights when it comes to cars and this name change thing, can anyone advise where I stand please? Do I have to take my car away to some other garage, or should Arnold Clark (legally) fix my car?
Thanks
Chris

Your claim is on the manufacturer's warranty, not the dealership. Toyota (or any manufacturer) will only authorise and pay for parts supplied and repairs carried out by their franchised dealers.
It's not a matter just of a 'name change'. AC no longer have a relationship with Toyota.5 -
It's unfortunate, but it's no different to having bought from them and them closing entirely.
For manufacturer warranty, you'd need to take it to somewhere that's still affiliated with Toyota. Your warranty with the local KIA place expired after 3 months.

Needs to be a franchised Toyota dealer. Dad had this issue with Honda. His preferred garage closed, the next one changed to Nissan/Renault franchise so he ended up having to go to the next city for warranty work.
Don't forget Toyota will provide a new warranty every year for up to ten years old 100k miles if you have it serviced with them.2 -
Thanks for the advice all, not what I was wanting to hear, especially with the extra cost/time inconvenience of the nearest Toyota dealer being so far. But again, thanks all0

Think about it this way. You're getting Toyota warranty work, at a Toyota dealer, using Toyota staff and Toyota parts...sounds like it's worth the trip to me. Get a courtesy car and you're sorted.

I travel 50 miles to a Peugeot main dealer as it’s £85-90 a year cheaper for servicing.
After fuel etc.
A free fix and up to 10 years warranty, I would put myself out.0 -
What's probably happened here is that Toyota terminated the dealership for being below par. KIA were happy to expand and take it on.
So it's not linked to Toyota in anyway anymore.

I’ve changed dealers twice because of poor service even though they were still the brands franchised dealer, if you have to travel to another dealer then, so be it, you could always take a book or something to entertain you while you wait for your car, you might even get a courtesy vehicle…0

Some would say it is to your advantage not to have to use Arnold Clark.3

Arnold Clark in Ayr were very good as a Toyota dealer, I used them for many years.
The AC group falling out with Toyota UK was unfortunate.
If you want any warranty work done you have no option but to use an officially franchised dealer so off to Macklin it'll have to be.0
