lol,my experience of the Terracotta Warrior exhibition at the British Museum wasn't much better......for £13.50 per ticket, I didn't expect it to be so packed and could barely see most of the exhibits, although the actual warriors were great. Perhaps the crowds have calmed down now though as it's been going for a few months.

The Egyptian galleries however are absolutely fantastic.....and they are free! Take your own lunch though as the restuarants are overpriced.

I had wanted to see the terracotta army, but plumped for tut instead :o My last visit to the British Museum was a very long one....just so much to see and as you say the Egyptian section is fabulous, especially the stone statues in there. Have to admit though I spent almost an hour sitting staring at the curled up mummy in the glass case because he fascinated me so much. My friend wouldnt look at him lol

Food is rather pricey there I agree, but also worth noting there is a Starbucks opposite as well :D

Thought The Terracotta Army was excellent, was busy, but if you waited for a few minutes people would move on and you could get to the front to have a good look and read the labels.

If you are at the BM and want food: go down Museum Street, opposite the main entrance, about 100 yds down on the right is "Giovanni's". Does excellent food and drinks - very busy around lunch time though.

I also thought the Terracotta Army was excellent - in fact there was more than than I was expecting to see.

A quick question on the Golden Funeral Mask - has the prohibition on it moving only been imposed recently? The reason I ask is that I went to the Tut exhibition at the British Museum in '71/'72 (can't remember exactly which year it was - I went on a school trip!) and I have a vivid memory of seeing the mask.

I loved the Tutankhamun display, didn't rate the Terracotta warriors at all - it must depend on the timing of your visit and how busy it is.
We visited the BM on the Sunday afternoon and it was ridiculously busy - they were letting people with any time slot in! You couldn't move and could barely see the displays.
With Tut, we had the first slot of the (monday) morning and it wasn't busy at all, we could get right up close to the exhibits and view them from every angle, it is a shame they didn't have a replica mask and sarcophagus though, it would have been just as impressive.

  • Thanks Culpepper for the low down on the Tut exhibition. I'm visiting London soon and it was on my list, but only if I could get tickets at a good price. Now I'm thinking twice about the whole thing. Might just go to the National Gallery instead!
  • I've been to the British Museum, I've been to the Museum in Cairo, Luxor, etc and the Tutankhamun Unmasked exhibition and enjoyed all of them.

I had no prior expectations, it was publicised that the funerary mask would not be present, so I just went along with an open mind and enjoyed.

Sorry that other people felt hard done by - you should have tried the Star Wars Exhibiton at the Launch of the Phantom Menace; a big hall seperated by blankets, a ship from the film on a wonky crane that moved by two feet, a bloke dressed as Darth Vader and a bank account £40 lighter. A double kick in the unmentionables given what the film was like (don't get me started..).

Money can't buy friends, but it can get you a better class of enemy - Spike Milligan.

    :rotfl:

Sounds like I could have set up something better in my local community hall and made a mint in the process!
