Removal companies Vs do it yourself

We did it ourselves twice.
£250 for a van for the weekend and got a couple of friends to help.
Each to their own. Sure, it was hard work but looking back now, I can barely remember it so it didn't put me off.

I'd pack and move anything that has sentimental value yourself. A removal company has insurance, but some things can't be replaced.
I moved just myself from a rented one bed flat over a couple of weeks - no white goods - I took stuff when I went to the new house, then hired a man with a van, and my dad and I helped him load/unload the big stuff (sofa, dining table and chairs, bed etc) and my friends and I loaded up 3 cars with remainder of my stuff. I had clothes, kitchen/dining stuff, towels, bedding and paperwork for one. It was fine, but now I have more furniture, tools, white goods and garden stuff I'd definitely use a removal service.Statement of Affairs (SOA) link: https://www.lemonfool.co.uk/financecalculators/soa.phpFor free, non-judgemental debt advice, try: Stepchange or National Debtline. I'd have to afree with hazjo. Movers are a godsend. You can't possibly be prepared for the amount of work a moving entails1

Dunno how far the OP got with reading this mountain of responses (I gave up three weeks ago on page 2, when the tally was "Removers- 14; DIY -3!) ...
but given that they moved last Friday and so, have now settled in to the new place; HOW DID IT GO?

I think they are thinking about the time. Moving 1 hour away means a 2 hour round trip which means you can realistically do 3 or 4 runs in a day. Moving 10 minutes away removes that restriction.
But yeah, the hard work is all the same, except you don't get to spend an hour in a van recovering!
We've (hopefully) moving ~1 mile away and will be going down the professionals route. Moving everything myself was fine when I was 20 and there wasn't any time constraints (I moved from parents house to student flat, then back, then into first home), but going from home to home with kids at 40 just isn't going to be fun.

Oh god yes, get the movers. We've moved loads of times - the last two times with movers and it is SO worth the money.
This last move, they took apart our furniture and re-built it in the new house. So when we got there our bed, and the kids beds were built and ready for us. It makes such a difference.0 -
