Inheritance tax reference numbers

hi everyone
we are currently filling in IHT400 and IHT436 (claim to transfer any unused residence nil rate band). I’m unsure if we need to get a Inheritance Tax Reference Number for mum (who passed away last month) and for dad (who passed 9 years ago).

our calculations, reading gov.uk and reading on here there will be no IHT to pay, so do we still need to get a tax reference number for mum (and dad?) ?

I read it as you’d only need a tax reference number for mum/mum and dad if you have IHT to pay?

Thank you all again for your help

If your father’s estate owed IHT it should have been sorted 9 years ago. If everything went to your mother that would not have been the case. As long as her estate will owe no IHT you don’t need a reference.
