Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was always under the impression that "cruise" insurance related to ships sailing on the open seas and calling into ports. By definition this would not include river cruises which would presumably be covered under any standard travel insurance policy?
I asked that question with my insurer but was told it was required for any cruises including river ones.

You can hold as many insurances as you want, you would only claim from one.

As you don't want to pay for an annual upgrade simply buy a one off policy for yourself for the cruise trip.
That wastes what I have already paid for the annual policy (since I don't have more trips booked on that one). Consequently I am unlikely to book a river cruise until next year when my current annual will have expired.
Have you compared the prices for the cruise next year compared to this year? Given inflation, you might find the cost difference between the two years outweighs any saving in insurance costs.

I'm a regular cruiser and have just returned from a river cruise. I can think of no situations where a river cruise would require additional cover compared with something like a coach tour.

With regards to booking, I've come across some very competitive deals where the departure date is in the next few weeks.

I didn't have a specific cruise in mind. I didn't get that far once I knew that my current insurance wouldn't be valid. I have now booked a different trip.

Have you actually asked your current insurer whether additional cover is required? I didn't think it would be needed for a river cruise but was told that it was.
