Minimal Gas Use - Can I change supplier

If you genuinely don't use gas for a decent number of days - and a really low electric user - you thought about trying a switch to someone like Utilita - possibly only possible / advisable(?) once the SP mess sorted(*,**).They have a tariff that effectively rolls their pseudo SC into the first 2 units of energy per fuel - but not sure if they will accept for just one fuel - and it's a smart meter tariffHaven't checked their first/saver rates against Ofgem cap rates and SC etc - but if compliant etc - or if works out cheaper for your actual useage - may be option. And now - well from July 1st - PP covered by EPG comp - PP should ideally be same cost as DD - so unless smart prepay a bind - no cost incentive to switch to credit direct debit (standard credit - pay on bill - remains more expensive).(*) As smart gas relies on electric as main network comms hub as a rule in UK - you might be stuck.(**) It can possibly from posts here complicate matters if switch mid complaint - even if new supplier would fit 2 new meters for free - you still have to resolve old billing etc (But then others say there is a refund deadline etc after switching etc - having never had the problem not sure myself)Good luck with SP - they were pretty inept in my experience - I ran mum's account under POA for a few years.

In what way is the electric meter "dodgy " . ? If Scottish Power suspect anything "dodgy " you will not be able to switch any meters as they put a block on that until whatever is "dodgy " is resolved .MikeyPGT said:
The problem with the electric is a dodgy meter so feel that it is unlikely anyone will want to take that one on!QrizB said:I'm not sure what the current options are for gas-only switches, but you could give Octopus a call / email / social media message and see if they'll take you?Depending on the nature of your electricity dispute, you might be able to switch that too.
Electric smart meters don t go wrong very often .Can you describe the condition of the meter and what the fault may be ?1 -
Long story re the electric meter - its a SMETS1 Prepayment meter which for some reason last August decided to credit me with an extra £200 due to a problem trying to top up via the post office. The £200 is only on the meter and not showing on the Scottish Power statements. I have tried all ways to get Scottish Power to put this right - it's not been possible to run the meter down to zero with the Government top ups so am only now starting to make inroads into it. Scottish Power have agreed that there is a problem, but don't seem capable of sorting it - the meter won't accept a change to a credit basis. The ombudsman is involved and has adjudicated that Scottish Power must replace the meter and stump up compo (I'm not holding my breath as SP didn't even btoher to provide any evidence!)In what way is the electric meter "dodgy " . ? I was reasonably happy to rock on with the gas on an old fashioned card top up meter until SP sent me a letter telling me that my gas bill would reduce by £134 based on my current usage (bearing in mind I only spent about £170 over the past year) which finally broke the camel's back!
I just want shot of Scottish Power but can't see how I can completely ditch them until they sort out the meter.Debt Free Wannabe by 1 December 2027

Deep seated hatred of Scottish Power and all who sail in her - would love to see Ofgem grow a pair and actually do something about it.0 -
Its a ghost credit that you don't want isn't it? So just switch and the new company will reset it or swap the meter.1
