Relocating to Chester or Wrexam

I'm relocating with my wife and toddler from London and trying to decide between Chester or Wrexam. Will be working in the North Wales area so both are commutable and we want to live in a town/city. We are both working professionals and would like to live somewhere with neighbourhood appeal that's safe and family-friendly. Open to both buying or renting.

Does anyone know these towns and would recommend one over another or any specifics areas within each to consider or avoid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Wrexham is a dump
Oswestry and whitchurch across the border in shropshire are nice places

    Chester is lovely.

    Wrexham is awful.

  • Chester definitely.  You will find some lovely houses, the city has lots of events, some very good schools, the river, parks etc. I love to  go there whenever I can.

Wrexham is a lot cheaper and has a better football team. Chester has better nightlife, restaurants and shops (though they seem to be on a downward spiral, that said Wrexham's are in free fall). If you actually want to live in the town/city Chester is probably the only option - the centre of Wrexham is not where I would choose to live. If you were happy to live in a village nearby there are lots of options.

If you think of the villages, look a Tattenhall or Malpas. Roughly equidistant from Wrexham & Chester giving you a choice for shopping. Both are just off the A41 so good road links
Wrexham is better for food shopping due to the closeness of the big shops to each other

Ive often been to Chester for work and its delightful compared to the dump Brighton, given some thought about moving there too, its always at the back of my mind. Good luck if you do it!

Given that Chester is probably a no brainer to live compared to Wrexham, Wrexham is Wales and Chester is England...do you have a preference??   (...and if madman Drakeford has his way it will be compulsary for you to learn Welsh if you move to Wrexham).

Start off with Rightmove and check out current house prices for Wrexham and Chester if buying ?
Same if your looking to rent !
Now Chester is an old city with history back to Roman times
Meanwhile Wrexham is now a City and has a famous football team and good shops as old market town.
    Better schools in Chester !
Lots of quality restaurants in Chester
Consider your new work place and the drive to work.
You get a lot of property in both Chester and Wrexham compared to London
Consider renting for 12 months to get to know the area.
Buying and selling are both expensive

My BFF moved to Chester for work some years ago.  It is a beautiful place but, like most popular tourist areas, can get very busy in the summer.  I can recall visiting her and we had to queue up to walk along the streets in the centre.  :D

She actually lived in Hawarden, a village in Wales near Chester.  The commute was easy and it was very quiet.

If you decide to live 'near' Chester check if you are in Wales or England as the border is around there. You might have a preference where you live.
