Wrong TV

We bought a 43 inch TV as a gift for someone a few days ago. We dumped it in their flat and immediately took them away for a few days, so it hasn't been looked at nor opened.

I received an email from the store manager to say they have given us the wrong TV, 55 inch instead of 43, and to contact them to discuss.

The problem is we live 200 miles away, and neither of the couple drive. They are 10-15 miles away from the store.  I'm fairly sure they won't want a 55 inch TV, as they don't have a huge flat.

What would it be reasonable for us to expect?

Could we expect the store to collect it and drop off the right one?

    Hello OP

This is correct, they should deliver the correct TV within a reasonable time and whilst they are there they can pick up the incorrect TV.

Best to leave the 55 inch TV still sealed in the box :)

Yes, it is their mistake, so up to them to sort it out.

I'd just phone them up and say that the TV was bought as a gift and delivered last week, but has not been unpacked yet, so if they're happy to collect it from the new location and deliver a new one there then problem solved.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Surprised you didn't notice as TV manufacturers seem to make it quite clear, with the use of very large writing, what size of TV is in the box.

The OP's account is ambiguous.  Stating 'we' dumped the television in the recipients' flat suggested they - OP and friend(s) - took it there personally, which differs from professional delivery.  Ergo there seems to be more to this, potentially that the OP was in possession of the television at some point prior to conveying it to the friends'.  Was it bought in a shop?

A small retailer might go and pick up the 55" telly and replace it with a smaller one as a goodwill gesture.  With a national chain it's anyone's guess, however the price differential - assuming the bigger set costs more - may make the enterprise worth the shop's while.

You have a very different definition of a goodwill gesture than I do.

I don't think there's any ambiguity in the OPs account. They bought a TV from the store and took it to the friends house.

The shop have made the mistake and admitted to it. If they want their TV back they need to make the effort themselves - it's irrelevant that it was purchased in store, it's not the OPs (or their friends) responsibility to arrange and pay the costs of the return.

It's not that clear, nebulous one might say!

It's not entirely clear why the store would have the contact details if it was physically purchased in a retail environment. It's also rather difficult to carry around a 55" tv that was meant to be 43" without noticing!

These are observations to the side however. The store have not said what they want to happen, they won't know that the TV has not been installed, in fact that it remains in an unopened state still seems a most unlikely scenario.

It's cost neutral to the store I'd have thought, now that the error has been made. In my old retail days we would have just written the loss off unless the purchaser complained, so it would be curious to find out what their proposals are.

As someone else has just pointed out.

If it was purchased by OP at a local store. Then to expect them, even though their fault. To pick up from somewhere 200 miles away is a bit of a stretch. Especially if it is not the likes of currys etc.

For all we know they may have opened & disposed of box & set it up on a wall..

Apologies for any ambiguity. I didn't regard the store as important, but it was Argos and I bought online for store collection. Argos knew my email as I have an account with them where they send receipts.

It was an impulse buy, we knew they wanted a TV, and we decided on the day to get them one, before picking them up.

The box was bigger than I expected, we carried it out to our vehicle and then when we got to their flat it was carried upstairs and left in the hall, as we needed to get away.

We were unaware and the store were unaware until someone came to collect a 55 inch TV and they could only find a 43 inch one. The manager then emailed me.

They've just got home by bus, and have confirmed it is 55 inch. It is still packaged.

I called the store and the manager is off today, but will ring me back tomorrow.

Ah, a click and collect type scenario. Plus a touch of plain old human error.

With Argos it ought to be straight forward enough, I've had to return something something back to them that was delivered for some reason, and one of their drivers collected it on their round. It was a while ago, but I'm pretty sure it was an exchange.
