Taking broadband contract to new address

I'm with Shell Energy Broadband and I'm moving house with 3 months still to run on my 18-month broadband contract. I called Shell to ask about options, and they are:
  • start new 18/24 month contract with Shell Energy Broadband at the new property
  • cancel and pay a fee
So there is, in effect, no option to take my existing contract with me and complete it at the new address. The only benefit to staying with Shell is that I avoid the penalty for switching.

Does this seem right?

It may depends on whether your current connection can be transferred; for example if you're on FTTC now and your new address is an FTTP only area, then that may be why you can't take your package with you.

That is standard.  You started a contract with Shell Broadband to supply broadband to your current address.  You are now breaking that contract as you want to move.  Shell had no say in your choosing to move.

If that's what their T&Cs say then you agreed to them 15 months ago.

Of course you could use this as an opportunity to negotiate a new deal with them at the new property as it cuts both ways. I suspect the 'fee' if you don't, isn't going to be exactly huge.

The cancellation fee will be the cost of the remaining time in the minimum term - monthly amount x months left.  So for three months it won't be much in the scheme of things.

Isn't it minus the VAT you would have paid or am I thinking of something else?

If it were possible to avoid both a new minimum term and early termination charges with your current provider when you move home while already inside a minimum term contract , and didn’t have any any commitment from that old ‘contract’ , you decided to use a different supplier at the new address , that new company would expect you to commit to a minimum term contract, probably the same length minimum term as what your old provider requires ( if you did use their ‘home mover’ service ) something they make available to avoid having to pay ETC , so what’s the issue ?, in these situations the company offering the home mover isn’t doing anything wrong, all they want is the same commitment as any new provider would want at the new address…..if someone didn’t want to use the old provider at any cost , and only had a few months left on the minimum term with them , simply pay the ETC and use whoever you want at the new address.
