Having been that person who descended from a loft faster than I went up to it, I can vouch for having someone else in the house on these occasions.

@Shropshirelass I wonder if that website will now cause a sudden spike in the sales of fondue sets, long-life melty cheese and chocolate. It's the kind of thing that could easily tempt me away from being vegan, especially if faced with a black-out evening on my own.
… I take that back, I've just found recipes for vegan fondues - both for cheese and chocolate ones. I'm now off to research fondue sets as well.

@Broomstick they can be spotted in charity shops, often never used! Then you just need a bottle of meths for the burner.

Hello everyone
I'm interested in this thread, I have browsed it, and it is very timely given the recent news about the UK government actually looking at worse case scenario e.g. food and fuel shortages due to blockade.
I'm not panic buying, but, I do try to have a reasonable store cupboard since COVID. Is anyone else doing anything differently or continuing just the same? I've had a good reminder on another thread for decent store cupboard items....

Remember to get you perfered seasonings in, nothing worse than bland food, and only get in food you will eat, no good getting rice if you don't eat it, as an example.

Thanks @boultdj
I do like a range of dried food like rice, couscous, pasta and quinoa which I have in rotation for variety, plus pulses, luckily.
That's a great idea - I am shopping today so I will double check what I have. Simple things like cinnamon and curry powder, so handy... I do grow herbs too like chives, garlic chives etc. Not looking at toilet rolls!

I was stocking up on canned beans and pulses yesterday in Lidl. They’ve got quite a good range these days with lentils, butter beans, black eye, borlotti, haricot, chickpeas and some currently on offer for 45p. I do have some dried beans but they do take quite some preparation.
They had a manual pressure cooker for £39.99 I think it was for a 6L. Although that seems a little large for me unless I batch cook and freeze the beans. Or is it ok to use with much less in I wonder?I’ve also been thinking about an electric one but I do have a gas hob with bulk tank supply. So in a grid down situation I would have that option with a manual uniy. Ideally I’d have both but cost and space are an issue for me.
I’d be interested to hear thoughts on manual vs electric pressure cookers. I am slightly apprehensive about the manual ones for some reason.

@rceebear I have a pressure cooker as part of my air fryer, so an electric one. I was a bit apprehensive at first and can remember them 'exploding' as a child. It works really well for us. My favourite thing is turnip which I like but hate cooking. I just stick it in in big chunks and it comes out practically as mash so I can then just freeze in portions. I also did some chickpeas which worked out well, I do think I should probably use it more but never get round to it, lots of functions on there that I hardly ever use! If prices keep going up then I may experiment a bit more with dried beans.

I'm scared of pressure cookers too, so love the electric one.
