Some of my fence panels need replacing. I don't have the money to pay someone to do it. So will be replacing panels one at a time when I have the money by making them up myself. I have sourced the feather edge that I need. But need wood for the cross members. I have no idea what the best is. I have found this https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Treated-Kiln-Dried-C16-Timber---45-x-70-x-3600mm/p/190165 this is roughly the same size as on the current fence panels. And nails I was thinking of https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-50mm-Galvanised-Round-Wire-Nails---400g/p/516033
Are both of these choices ok?

They will be ok but the nails are a bit long for the size of wood, I would go for 30mm long instead0
-
I would use screws for making up the actual frame though0

I used similar lengths of timber when I built 30m of feather-edge fence along one border and after five years it's holding up fine so far.
I used a nail gun to attach the feather edge, and though it jammed a lot it still saved a lot of time. If using actual nails I would use something shorter than 50mm like Simonon77 suggests,Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20231 -
Why make panels? If you’ve got the featheredge boards why not buy three arris rails (and brackets) and nail the boards up. Overlapping each board will provide a much stronger fence0

I might not know much but I do know what I need to do in this case. just not sure of the best wood to use.I am guessing you are assuming I have wooden posts. I think you may struggle to get the rails to slot into the posts.
I'd suggest speaking to a local trade merchant and asking for plain unshaped arris rails and some of these brackets.

Sorry for offering advice.1 -
I don't understand why calleyw will need brackets the wood he's suggested is the right thickness to fit into the slot on his post. I've made some the same one rail top and bottom and nail feather edge to it0

Sorry to jump in post, I'm away to start building a feather edge fence. First time ive done one of these.
Plan was 2.4m 100x100 posts 500-600mm in ground, spaced 1.8m. 3 rails 38mm x 72mm, top rail at very top of posts. 100mm gravel board at bottom of posts. Featheredge slats attached to rails overlapped 25mm. top capping rail nailed to top rail an sticking over top of slats.
Does that sound about right?
My main concern is it standing up to wind with it being "solid", but need this for the privacy.0
