Do you tip the removal men (or women !)

Hi all,

When I moved 14 years ago I gave the removal men a 150 pounds tip as that seemed to be the 'norm' of what you did..

Is it still normal to tip the removal men ?  Or do people not bother anymore (especially with the costs of moving !)

I'm currently going through the sell/purchase process hence my question.

Thanks,
Mark

We did. But we moving during a lockdown, with them working around six of us at home, they were a man down, it was January, cold and raining and they were so cheerful and helpful that I felt they deserved it. I could only stretch to £60 between the three of them, but hoped it was appreciated.

I also made sure to email the company to pass on how the men were so helpful and made a very stressful day a little easier. I also left a couple of positive reviews on various sites for the company.

I don't think a tip is necessary (I haven't tipped with previous movers) but this time really felt that they went above and beyond with the work and wanted them to know how much I appreciated them on the day.

I always have, whilst the overall cost is fairly high that inevitably goes to the company and the guys doing the job aren't particularly well paid.

A couple of times distances have been more than they thought (front door to where they could park) or its required more boxes etc but those complaints dont materialise into anything after tipping (money in their pocket -v- their bosses)

We were going to, but they were terrible! Gave them drinks throughout the day but that was it.

It depends on the service you get on moving day. Generally £50 each is what we give plus cakes/drinks etc to keep their strength upm

I don't tip.  I don't expect to be paid extra by any customer for my normal work, and I don't think it's sensible for that to be the expectation or norm anywhere else.

If they did something extra, like shuffling furniture around if I changed my mind where it should be put, then that's a different question.

I did, last time I moved, but not a huge amount - I can't now remember whether it was £5 or £10 each
I'm ambivalent about tipping in general but in this case I felt they'd been helpful and it wasn't a massive amount in terms of the over all cost of the move.

We tipped them £25 (on basis it would be enough for a round at the pub or so) and I gave them some home made muffins. :)

Yes. I moved last July and gave them £40 tip (there were two of them).

I had to move myself into a rental during the first 2020 lockdown when removals weren't 'essential workers'.  Driving was limited to 'shopping or medical' so my son couldn't come to help either.  I found it a very lengthy and physically hard process.

I moved again in March 2021 and was so very relieved to have a local removal company. The men worked very hard and I tipped them £20 each.  If I ever move again I'll also pay for the packing service.
