Great idea reallongshanks. I told the woman across the road from me about the 'offer'. She's a single working parent with not much money and was telling me that because she's spent all her money on presents for her two children they would be having chicken for Christmas dinner. I offered to look after her two children while she went to Tesco (its just around the corner) and she had the biggest smile on her face when she got back. Her joint was completely free at the self service till. When she was at the till the sales assistant was dealing with a query and she said she's never left Tesco so quickly before he noticed that she had only paid for a tin of pineapple rings! So thanks again OP from my friend - you've made her Christmas!

Would it show up on the price check scanners in the middle of the store, instead of going to the till before finding out. I'm tempted to try it, what do you think?

It won't show up on the scanner as it's a discount that only comes off at the till: you have to go through the whole transaction before the discount shows up.
