I’ve had an email this morning saying they’re going back to HSBC? The app will no longer work and I’ll have to amend payment methods. What on Earth is going on!

It just means that if you still have a balance on your old card, you just need to settle it directly with HBSC, rather than via John Lewis.
They're not 'going back' to HSBC.1 -

It might be relevant in future, if for example you need to do a S75 on something you purchased from the JLFS product.

Or there's a late CPA, or a refund.
Bottom line is, they can't not tell you where the account resides. And the change has to refer to a future date - they can't do it retrospectively.0 -

My husband got the same email, but I didn't. It was flagged as spam so we were suspicious. Also we both pay our balances each month and our old JL accounts were long since finished. So, we don't understand why we would get this email now. Highly suspicious.0
