Broadband without big supplier

Hello all. We recently moved house and wanted to take our landline number with us for our business. We were put in touch with a company locally that does this type of thing as I wouldn't have a clue how to do it. We were only moving round the corner but the dialling code changed, hence wanting to keep our old number. We also were told by the same company they could supply broadband without a landline so we went ahead with that too.
The 12 month contract for the BB is ending soon and we can get BB and anytime calls (internet) cheaper with one of the big suppliers which means we could advertise our business in the new area code, plus we'll still keep the virtual number.
So here's my question: is it possible to go to Openreach (or whoever this company gets my BB from) direct? I'm only asking because I didn't even know these independent suppliers existed. Also, is it possible for me to manage the virtual number, or is that now not possible as they did it from the start?
I'm not asking the company as they know I haven't a clue about these things so in theory could be economical with the truth!
Thank you in advance.

You cant go to Openreach direct, you need an ISP. It sounds as if your number has been ported to VOIP by the new provider, you would need to port it out to a new VOIP provider which may or may not be the same as your ISP. Not all ISP's provide a VOIP service, Plusnet for example don't.
