Tesco, difference between sim free and payg

I've just been into Tesco and bought a Moto G13 for a super £119. On the website it said £30 discount for payg, yet the sim free has the same price. So i went in and the assistant said they were both reduced. So I asked for the sim free and was very happy. When I get home it says on the box payg. So I ring Tesco mobile and talk to a lady, who didn't exactly reassure me. I said will my non tesco sim card work, she said it should. I asked whats the difference between payg and sim free and she couldn't answer me. Do i go back to the shop before breaking the seal .

Sim free means it is not locked to a network. Tesco just happens to be selling it. If it were Asda I know you have a month and you can return it used but in perfect condition and they refund. (as I understand it) : They shouldn't be selling locked phones now because you fully own the phone. It should then also be possible to unlock it. However, if you bought it and can't use it, it can be classed as faulty. IF you are unsure just tell the staff that certain apps aren't working properly when you take it back. "no quibble" means you are covered.
"If your phone becomes faulty within the first 14 days of purchase, we offer a no quibble refund service. If your phone was bought in a Tesco store, please return it fully boxed and including accessories such as battery, headset, charger and SIM card to the customer services desk in store." NOTE this is from tesco IE.
Tesco dot com wants you to contact customer service. https://www.tesco.com/help/articles/12740094094873-Returning-SIM-free-and-pay-as-you-go-mobile-phone-products
You have every right to approach the person who sold you the phone and tell them the issue too, just don't kcik off.

So have you seen the phone advertised by tesco at different prices, sim free or payg?
I don't think manufacturers are allowed to lock handsets to a particular network now but I suppose there may be other reasons why a handset is not compatible with the frequency ranges used by a particular network, so they would be wary of calling the phone universal.1 -
So sorry , I've made a big mistake. There is a sim card packet under the seal which covers most of the phones box, it's that which says payg not the phone. Please feel free to mock, thanks for the replies. Jeez0
