Air Con/Heating

Options
Hi we're looking to install AC into 1 room, and I gather some units can also function as a Heat Pump in winter. I've contacted local suppliers for quotes, but does anyone have an idea of costs and recommendations on what units to go for?

Thanks
LS

I have 4x Daikin split systems, i think they are FTXM or N, probably superseded by now...
And yes correct they also function as heating in winter, i didn't realise this when i bought them but i use them now instead of my gas c/h in winter, it would still tick on now and again but i use them for 90% of my heating in winter.
Daikin have a great app which you can use to control your system and set timers etc, i cant comment on if other makes also do....

Installed cost should be less than £2000. Daikin, Mitsubishi, and Fujitsu are all good brands. I would pay for one of these better brands to get something that will be more reliable, longer lasting and quieter.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Well I've had 2 quotes back, both for about £1800. The options offered are:
    • Mitsubishi MSZ-AP25
    • Samsung Cebu
    • Panasonic CS-TZ
If anyone has any experience or recommendations of any of these, I'd appreciate it.

Afraid not, but we had two Mitsubishi SRK 20ZSX-W fitted five years ago which have suited our needs perfectly since.
    Sorry if not much help.

There are TWO Mitsubishi companies (completely unrelated) making ASHPs...  Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Electric.

The quote for a MSZ-AP25 is Mitsubishi Electric while the SRK 20ZSX-W mentioned above is a Mitsubishi Heavy Industry one.

Different installers tend to supply one brand in preference to others.

Check out if units have wifi/app connectivity as standard as it's not always standard or on more expensive model ranges only.  Should such a feature be important to you.

FWIW we had a Fujitsu indoor unit leak at just over 5 years but it was uneconomic to repair.  Replaced with a MHI system from a different installer.

Easy to find out the cost of the units and install kits online e.g. https://www.saturnsales.co.uk/Air-Conditioning-Heat-Pumps.html

Exact size / rating and model will depend on room(s) sizes and heating/cooling needs.

I have a Mitsubishi HI unit which cost ~£1500 to fit 4 years ago...  works flawlessly.  It was more expensive as it's a floor standing model, it looks like a fat radiator, and also the compressor is about 10m away so needed more work to fit.  It's in a loft conversion so we didn't have the height for the more standard wall mounted type.  It doesn't have WiFi capability but I bought a £8.99 IR sender from ebay so I can operate it with my phone.

Downstairs I have an ElectriQ model which I bought and fitted myself for £579 + £30 for a diamond core drill bit.  It does have WiFi capability.  Works perfectly and if I turn it to max, will turn my entire open plan downstairs into a sweatbox within half an hour.  The quality difference between the two is night and day though, but it cost so little (comparatively), I don't mind.

I would say it depends on what your needs are.
The units have to be spec'd correctly to function well and have good COP.
    Larger units are less efficient
Multi splits are worse compared to standalone units
Mitsubishi any day, much better than Daikin (you can see in my signature)
Most models have WiFi, Mitsi is better.
Heats up quickly and can hold temperature well, we used it as main heating for our home

    Downsides
You need Planning permission to install any Heat pump which can cool
Might need dedicated spur for wiring
Mitsi are more expensive compared to other units

@Waywardmike is the ElectriQ one of those units where all the gubbins is indoors and you put two ducts through the wall to feed air to the condenser? If it is, how's the noise level?
(Conventional split systems put the noisy parts outdoors.)

@danrv did, two years ago, and IIRC he's has been using it as his sole source of heat (replacing his storage heaters). He has an informative thread here:
