And if you don't have a staple gun , a few long cable ties would do.1

You could position the cable ties behind the supports as you are sticking them? You'd be doing one support at a time, and only the lower tie would need to be between the wall and support so it might not be too fiddly to position.
Or you could always glue the screen to the supports, but you'd risk the adhesive squeezing through and looking a bit messy.I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.1 -
Cable ties will be fine if you sandwich them between the wall and the supports as you attach them. I don't know exactly what a 'basic toolkit' is, but a cheap drill has always featured in mine, as it saves so much faff or having to employ someone else.

Nero if you really don't think you'll use one again, could you hire one or cadge one off a friendly neighbour? Why does Sherlock Holmes love Mexican restaurants? Because they give him case ideas.2

If drilling is an option and the issue is confidence, then I'd suggest going for it - the wall is already fairly dinged up so it's very unlikely you'd do anything seriously bad.
Top tips would be to watch a few youtube videos to get some confidence, always start with a small drill bit then work up to enlarge the hole to what you need, and don't try and do it all at once - go in a bit, then back off and clean out the hole (push the bit in and out or blow hard).

You can still buy staples that you fit using a hammer. Our ironmongers sell them loose but they also come in packs. Depending on the thickness of the edge you could also use the plastic cable grips that come with pins.1

You could fix a wooden batten between the posts.
I pixk up loads of light thin ones from the building supply yards from their'broken, discard' corner. They come from brick deliveries and really useful for odd jobs and free. Just glue them on.
Then attach the cane fence.
Btw my stapler cost about £2, its plastic and really useful for odd jobs. Staple netting to fruit cage made of wood, privacy netting in summer to a fence panel etc.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
