Android 12 - closing Apps.

Hi.
Just graduated from a Pixel 3 to 4, the latter whose speed makes my nose bleed, and which runs Android 12. But, found my network usage increased since the new one, and then discovered the reason was that every bludy App I'd opened had remained so, even tho' I'd swiped them upwards to oblivion, as I did with my previous phone (And 9 or 10?).
So, And 12 doesn't 'close' Apps with a swipe, but 'background' them.
I've since looked up how to fully close Apps, but I'm truly staggered to find that this involves first flicking the bar steward upwards to make it 'go away', followed by a sloooow drag up from the screen bottom, hooooold, in order to bring all background Apps up in 'minimised' form (or whatever the hell it's called), from where they can then be swiped upwards to their death. Or, if a few open, scroll sideways and 'close all'.
Surely this cannot be the case? On my Pix3, I just (as I recall), flicked upwards, and App was closed. On Pix4, I need to swipe upwards to 'background' it, then sloooowly drag up from the bottom to bring it back in 'small' mode, and then a further flick upwards to kill it. Really?
Please tell me there's a quick way to shut off Apps.
Ta muchly.

Thanks, ONTW.
Yes, useful, but that's what I've been doing. Swipe up. Slow swipe up and hold. Swipe up. What a bludy palaver!
The earlier Android would shut an App down with one swipe. 12 takes at least 3. What the hell?
Or am I missing summat?0 -
I often have a dozen or more apps "backgrounded" on my Android 13 phone. The data used daily is negligible, are your apps particularly thirsty or do you operate with a very tight data budget?

I would get more data in your plan or go into the settings to turn off auto updates. If an app is using lots of data in the background I would question whether I really needed that app and see if I could get rid of it.

Good points, folks, and it looks as tho' I'm old school here
As with my PC, I just like to be able to open and close progs/Apps at will. Every time my sil asks me to take a look at her 'slow' laptop, I find it has numerous tabs opening on startup. Can't abide it. It's not just the slowness, but the 'hunt the app I want' element with multiple open pages.
The data usage on my phone isn't really a concern - for the light use I make of it, there's plenty. There are some exceptions, tho', and I think the one that caused me to first be aware of unusual consumption was my CCTV feed. I'll only glance at that once a couple of days, but found that it - of course - was still running even after I'd swiped it 'closed', as I would with my previous phone.
I just wish to be able to close down unwanted Apps as quickly as I open them, that's all. MSE I'll look at a couple of times a day, typically. Ditto Fb. Less for eBay. I don't want or need these to keep on running when not it use - they take only a fraction of a second to load from scratch. But seemingly 'no'. To open an App takes one tap. To close it takes a swipe, a sloooow upwards move and hooooold, and then another swipe. I find that truly astonishing.
Why not, say, one upwards swipe to fully close, or - I dunno - a downwards swipe to 'background' it?0 -
On a Pixel (it says here) you can do Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver so apps in the background only use data when on wi-fi.
Which is, of course, not an answer to your "quick kill" question. I guess that a fast app resume is considered more desirable than constant data/battery use.3 -

That would certainly be useful. Thanks - I'll check it out.

that might mean of course that apps in the background that you want to run and use data ( example checking for new emails, Fbook and WhatsApp messages etc) will not be able to do that, but that may not be a concern for you1

Not an Android user but no matter how the OS decides it will manage my apps I generally like to shut them down and not just close them. The only app that I allow have constant access to t'internet is weather. It can be a pain but you need to manage things on your phone that are likely to use data.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid1

In general it isn't a problem. I'm clearly getting notifications even tho' the Apps - WhatsApp, Messenger, Guardian :-) - even tho' they are 'closed', and that's good and I'd wish to continue.
What I cannot abide is that some Apps, like my CCTV, and presumably things like Maps, whatthreewords, etc would keep on using significant data if left 'background'.
All of these are opened with one touch, but are an absolute palaver to fully close. That's just wrong.
Very bad Android.0
