I prefer to use a local independent place for my eye tests and specs. They have never tried to upsell anything. Plus their prices are not a rip off.
Just out of curiosity, what do they currently charge for an eye test, and for frames+varifocals?

Frames and varifocals, of course, vary - depending on which frames and which class of varifocal you want.

He's asking @oldagetraveller1 what his independent's prices are, not what specsavers prices are!

Depends if you’re choosing designer frames or not.
I don't really buy this designer frame thing, since the only difference is a little logo, but FWIW I had two pairs of designer frames from Specsavers, both with the very top of the range varifocals and both with photochromic lenses for £375.

I'm genuinely curious to know what an independent would have charged, but my last experience with one was about 25 years ago and the cost then was £200 for one pair.

I like Specsavers. They are our ‘local’ optician at a little under an eighty mile round trip.
The glasses usually take a week - 10days to be made, but Specsavers very kindly post them to us to save the second trip. Obviously if they don’t fit perfectly we can pop in when we are next in town for unlimited free adjustments but that has rarely been required over the decades my husband and I have been customers.
I have also learned that I don’t need the 2 for one offer, and by declining it I get a £50 discount.

Me, nothing, for my annual examination.
I don't know their current prices for frames, lenses because I haven't been "persuaded" to buy any for the past 4 years. If I recall, I was pleasantly surprised at the price for varifocals and non "designer" frames.
Specsavers - called in a week before my 60th birthday, I wasn't aware then that an eye test was "free" for over 60s, charged me their full price for the test. It would have been more customer friendly to tell me to wait a week for the test and I wouldn't need to pay.

As the OP I thought that I would just update you all.
Thanks to this weeks MSE weekly Mail, I have just bought two pairs of Ted Baker glasses from Speckyfoureyes for £37 each inc P&P. (should have cost around £300)
A huge thank you MSE. Check out this weeks mail.

Which just shows up the vast profit margins on so-called ‘designer’ frames on the High Street. Stick the word on front of anything and triple the price.
